If you're looking for some clever trick that will both get you a hearing and put the dentist in question in a receptive mood, I doubt such a trick exists. You might get a few moments, but sneaky tricks won't get you a receptive audience.

Your best bet is getting them to initiate contact. You do this by doing things like publishing white papers, placing articles in trade magazines, etc. Another possibility is working with the other people dentists use, like accountants, tax advisors, and so on. A third possibility is showing up at professional events and networking face to face.

I wonder how long before we get a one liner recommending Facebook?

I have a hunch that if you launch into a sales pitch while in the chair, you might find that dentist getting a bit stingy with the Novocaine...

  • 35% of dentists CANNOT afford to retire.

call to help them and put the reception, and manager in the loop.

    I sold PPC to dentists.
The practice managers help you get the dentist's Attention and help the Yes or No.

It's in your head - Stop It. they are not gatekeepers.

          Note to you:

You are the one who is in here looking for and asking for ideas. Not me.

I just received the Latest "not dead at all" edition of the yellow pages and proceeded to fill an ad program from the information.

I also picked up 2 new accounts for solo EDDM postcard mailers - 10,000 ea. month, over the next six months, from that same yellow pages book.

Let me know when you catch up with the rest of us.

Delivery of Yellow Pages in Our town stopped 2 years ago. I guess I'll never catch up to you "postcard sellers" . .. although i did sell a $50,000 painting in my eCommerce store last night...

But, maybe you can turn me onto the solo EDDM postcard mailers. would love to hear more...

Don't want to be mean, but I have the feeling you wouldn't do well with the dentists, either. I mean, if you can't persuade the gatekeeper, how will you persuade the dentist?

I mean, gatekeepers tend to have a pretty good understanding of what the dentist wants and likes and so on.

They are not there to keep all people away from the dentist, they're there to only send to the dentist people that are a good match. Show you are a good match.

I totally agree with this post. Many offices have a person in charge who keeps things running smoothly behind the scenes, allowing the dentist to do what they do best. She's probably been there forever and even if you did get past her/him, they wouldn't be happy about it.

I just signed a dental office and the owners role was merely to rubber stamp our agreement.

    Im curious, why dentists?

There are ways to get more dentists than you can handle. I manage a couple dental practices and I personally have had no problem getting referrals to other dentists in my area for SEO and business consulting and now bigger partnership deals with other consultants, but it started with something small.

Dentists tend to know each other quite well and work with many other businesses you could branch out to if you don't need only dentists, (ie, vendors, labs they work with, other oral surgeons, or doctors that are in their common referral network). I've developed relationships with a lab in my local area and got more referrals than I could handle for dentists, it helped he was the largest and most established laboratory in the region. but that's another way to get your foot in the door. FYI, don't underestimate how much even seemingly small labs profit monthly.

I remember reading studies saying that Dentists have the highest suicide rate of any profession. It's becoming harder for dentists to make money with the traditional model. The really successful ones I know are offering other high ticket/profit services or doing hybrid practices to hit the numbers they are looking for.

Also a few of my SEO friends also have 90% or more of their clients in "hard to get" clients. Areas like lawyers. but if you do the right thing they are one of the easiest to close you just have to know how to approach each type of client and tailor it to that audience. This one guy I know is probably the highest paid SEO I know of (excess of $700K per month doing SEO) almost all his clients are lawyers. The reason why its so easy for him is because he got the first results and then after he can prove his skill, he tells other lawyers, look at how much you are losing to #1, you going to let them beat you? Out of respect i wont say publicly exactly what he does but he uses their ego and pride to his benefit in closing the sale. I think he's around 80% closing ratio on his presentations... He doesnt go cold and offer his high ticket right away though. You can google "SEO splitting" and you will get a better idea of what he did to start.

      Eric,
Excellent feedback!! I am targeting Dentist and Car dealers for now. No particular reason, maybe because there are so many competing with each other and i notice most have horrible websites. I Offer videos specifically for SEO, website engagement, reputation management and social media visibility. Once, I get an appointment I can almost always close. MY challenge is I hate to cold call !

    You can thank me later.

Find a recent ad [print] that they have run. Clip the ad and paste it to a postcard
with a note or two. [you'll have to think up your own notes but along the lines of those below]

"Do you know what's missing from your advertisement?"
"I can show you how to massively improve your response:
"Did you know that you could improve this advert even more with my help?"

Plus add a call to action .....call me...or whatever

Put the postcard into an envelope and address it marked "private and confidential"
    directly to the head honcho.

    They'll call you.

Ever think of the opposite sales approach. When you get a referral, you don’t need a script. Your referral source has pre-sold you and your capacities. All you require to say is who you are, who referred you, and make an appointment a time to talk. You’re “proud” to mention your company name. Because you are announced by a terrific, trusted resource, your prospect wants to know whose calling–they want to know.

I've not had too much of a difficulty getting hold of dentists but I do a little bit of pre-work before getting in the door:

    1. Know if they advertise

I use this simple line on the phone: "Hi, this is ____ and I'm calling about your advertisement on ____ are you the one in-charge of that?"

Sound authoritative. 9/10 times you'll be transferred directly to them or they'll say yes they're in charge. Of course, this works well for me because my product enhances advertiser conversions. For the rest of you who don't sell SEO / web development, you'll have to use this line:

"Can you tell me what your most expensive procedure is?"

    ------------

What you should NOT say is:

    1. Are you the owner?
    2. Is the owner in?
    3. Can I speak to the owner please?

Lol... you guys know none of that works in 2016.

It's always a good idea also to get a lead list. Google some reputable ones. I like Hoovers but they are pretty expensive. The benefit with lead lists is you get their names every time. Now you can simply say,

    "Hey, Bob?"

They say yes or no. If yes, do your pitch. If no, ask for Bob and say, "it's ___!"

and sound pissed off like how could they not remember you.

      Something like that.

I had a marketing idea for local businesses that involved business cards.

I went to a local print shop and asked who they had done business cards for. They know me and there was an incentive for them to help me.

Among the names they gave me were 2 dentists. I had the printer call them since they were his customers. He told them about "his" offer for free business cards for them, along with a twist. The printer scheduled an appointment for me to stop in and show them "his" idea.

In both cases, I was able to meet with the dentists and office managers. The whole thing took less than an hour of my time and worked like magic.

So, find someone who knows your target prospect and let them help you to get in the door.

      Ron

I can think of 2 ways off the top of my head.

    1. Connect with the dentist directly via their LinkedIn / FB profile. Find out their clinic or dentist name and check it out on LinkedIn/FB.
    2. Run FB Ad targeting FB page or group liked/joined by dentists. There are tons of such pages/group and can be found by doing searching on FB.

Make friends with them by building rapport and they'll usually help get you to the dentist after that. Some are really tough to deal with, but short of getting the dentist's cell phone number, there's no other way. It's difficult with dentists too because they are usually working on patients one after another all day.

Try and set a good time to reach the dentist with the gatekeeper.
