[Cold Calling] Asking for Payment Over the Phone

I'm about to start a cold calling campaign for my product/service.
I would like to know from an experienced sales telemarketers (for Consumers not Businesses) if asking for credit card information over the phone is a viable and recommended way of collecting payment.

Of course i could collect money by directing them to a website where they can pay via credit card/pay-pal or send a bill to their address but i am worried doing any of those 2 options will get the "lead" cold.

Your thoughts ? past experience ?

It depends on the service or product that you are selling,

The telemarketer that you will hiring should have the credibility

and will not mess with the customer's credit card, it really is hard to trust someone

specially for company that is just new in the market

Taking a credit card number over the phone is very common now. Don't send them anywhere. Get the number. Charge the card.

Thank you for this re-enforcement advice.

I used to run a big company who provides a service and we would take customer's CC over the phone many times a day.
However the customer was calling us, interested in our service, needing our service.

With my new product/service, i am actually bringing something new, i need to connect with them on a emotional level where they will feel that i and my product could benefit them.
then i would need them to trust me enough to give me their credit card over the phone,a person who they never spoke before.
so i think it's going to be a bit more challenging than what I've done before.

    What country are you in?
    I ask for a reason.
I am in Australia and have managed large and small telemarketing call centres for many years. I also started as a telemarketer.
Here we have rules that say you can list your numbers on the DO NOT CALL registry and then you're forbidden to call those people.
There's also a cut off time in the evening, after which you can't ring people.
I think it's 8pm nowadays but that may have changed.

You have to remember that every time somebody answers your call, you have interrupted them. They'll also be annoyed you rang (mostly) unless you have what they want.

My point here is that you need to be wary of asking for credit card details at the start. You must build rapport and you have very little time to do so. If they don't trust you, you don't stand a snowman's chance in hell of winning that sale.

    Good luck!

I worked in cold sales for years.
Prepare for the shit storm that will follow you. I have been threatened and all sorts.
People get pissed off when you call them at home, unless you have what they want or need. But do not know it yet.
In my experience get the money of them asap, do not send them anywhere. they will get cold feet and pull out. By taking the cash there and then you are making them commit.

    Good luck

  • I've done email marketing campaigns for a physical product recently, no phone calls and they still buy online. I don't like getting the payment details over the phone because you have no proof of authorization when they decide to fight it. I prefer they pay online, because they have to enter the payment information themselves and can't say you did it without authorization.
