Something that I learned in Las Vegas

Me and some friends were in las vegas recently. When we wanted to go out to eat, we would consult with yelp to see which restuarants were worth checking out

One day when i was looking for mexican restaurants to try i was stunned to discover a mexican restaurant right off the strip that had over 2,000 reviews.

To put that in context, there are many restaurants where i live that have been opened for decades and have less than 100 reviews. This restaurant was only 2 years old.

See the reviews here: https://m.yelp.com/biz/el-dorado-can...as?osq=mexican

The secret it turns out was simple:

The owner would come to each table and request that we all create a yelp account and post a review. If we did that, we got a free dessert...and we all did

Of course, the food was amazing so it was easy to leave a good review

Anyway, i thought this would be a helpfull trick that could be shared with local business that would guaranteed to boost their foot traffic

This restaurant owner has cleverly applied the principle of using 'FREE' gifts to grow his business. Works in all types of businesses if appropriately applied.

Well Zach.. lets hope someone from Yelp doesn't see this post... the people at the nice restaurant you visited wont like you after they get nailed for violating TOS. https://www.yelp.com/static?country_=US&p=tos Section 6 Restrictions Sub A Sub 1... you cant solicit reviews with the intent of there being an exchange for doing so.. IE free dessert.

In regards to easy and the internet.. it usually means that it is really looked down apon... 100 reviews and they have been there for years.. this guy has a gazillion in like 6 months. Yelp will figure it out, and then what? the top of the list goes back to the guy with 100.. the honest guy. the guy that plays by the rules... Its all fun and games until the rules bite you in the tail.

Ill tell you what.. go back in a year or 2 the guy probably wont be there. How can I say this? because if something as trivial as a Yelp listing he is blasting the rules with wild abandonment where else is he doing the same? it will all catch up.

So here is my real beef with this.. I personally could care less if he violates tos.. but his competitors do.. they will rat him out. But there is something else here. The same principle applies in SEO as it does reviews.. that principle is being an exception. 100 reviews in years... 2000 in 6 months. It stands out, and in the world of algorithms that's not good.

Whats that saying? "Everything in Moderation".. greed sees beyond moderation.. beyond rules. It drives through you like the winds on a high mountain peak. Success is controlling the greed.. seeing the moderation in all things.. and being there 2 years from now.. 5 years from now, 15 years from now.

There is really no such thing as overnight success. Success is developed over time. In the end, if you take shortcuts..it will be great at the time, but long term.. not so hot.
