Are flat envelopes worth the premium?

Hi,

I plan on hand writing some letters to display ads in the yellowpages offering marketing services. Each ad will point out specific ways their ad could be improved. I offer more tips as my dangler to encourage a callback.

I can send out #10 window envelopes from click2mail.com for $.80/piece or flat envelopes for $1.66 per piece (so about 2x the cost). If the flats get a better response I'll use them, since my mail volume is quite low.

Do they make a difference though? Are they seen as more serious or important? Or is this a trivial factor?

A better question to ask yourself...

"does this look like a personal letter that has to be opened?"

Get that right and everything falls into place.

    Best,

I'd be careful about offering too many tips upfront.

You might be better off suggesting the possible percentage improvement by changing a specific aspect.

Or suggest how competitor X changed one or two things and this is how it improved their results.

Don't give the game away in the initial approach.

You want to train them to call you not train them to change their ads.

    Best regards,

    Ozi

When I tried the yellow page and letter thing before I used flat envelopes. I got a good amount of replies but I choose the wrong time of year and no one really "needed" my services.

I've heard some people even going as far as doing certified mail.

I don't think adding tips is needed -- maybe saying the benefits of your services instead ?

Best of luck with your campaign... I hope it delivers the results you want.
