G Places vs Adwords Search

If a local business has the 1st spot in Places, it doesn't seem to make much sense to run Adwords Search ads. I know some people recommend trying to dominate the 1st page of the serps, but I wonder how many of those searching would have clicked on the Places listing if the company didn't have an ad?

I guess if you have a landing page for your ad that is going to convert better, maybe an ad makes more sense. Any thoughts?

It depends on what you are targeting.

You should always run a brand campaign bidding on the business name as it will only cost very little but prevent others who are using the business as a keyword from ranking higher in the search.

The other advantage of running search ads is you can segment out your adwords targeting into very specific campaigns with matching ads targeting the search term so you show a highly relevant ad to the person searching and as you mention above having a specific landing page for each segment can improve results overall.

    Best regards,

Why not occupy another place in the SERPs? If you have the budget available, you might as well. Some people go to the first thing they see... others will go down to the 3 pack, and compare...

Eliminate as much of the competition as possible. Run the ads and block other businesses. The less competition you have in the area, the better.

My thinking is like IamNameless': it's not just to get a click but to reduce the number of clicks your competitors get... If their reach goes down, yours goes up, you reap indirect benefits too.
