What should I be upselling as a web designer?

I want to market myself as a web designer who builds sites that get more leads and sales. In that vein I think I may be able to upsell PPC on Adwords and Facebook.

I also read a book by Bob Serling that mentioned the power of licensing deals. Basically for you doing all the work, you get to keep 20% of any new revenues you generate. So if I can map out a good campaign online or offline, that might be viable as well. This idea is quite hazy though as I'm sure you can tell.

I would also like to hear more traditional upsells for design/agency businesses if anyone knows. I heard a training program on how to update the site is a good match. Any others?

What you mentioned is good, but you might also be able to upsell website content, blog posts, social media posts, case studies, newsletters, etc.

(If you can't do the writing yourself, find a local writer and outsource.)

    Hi,
Instead of just marketing websites that get leads , market funnels.

This way you're marketing a larger package that would include:
    Their main site
    Their lead page
    Writing their free eBook (carrot)
    Writing the lead page copy
Creating their first digital product to sell (it they don't have products yet)
Writing the copy for the sales page for that product
    Creating the sales letter page
    Writing the email series
Placing the series in their auto responder.

Then of course they buy their web hosting, auto responder etc through your links and you get the commissions there too.

You could sell these each as single items and have different sized packages all the way to your master pack where you do it all for $25,000 or more.

    That;s what I would do.

I have no idea why a web designer would even attempt to consider PPC as an upsell.

You're a web designer, create content/services that are related, for instance, build Wordpress themes and provide support (ex: themeforest).

  • As it seems there is a huge twofold misconception out there. First, everyone thinks they can be web designers (by just buying a theme without knowing basic code!) and second, after being a "web designer" they go on to become digital marketers (by watching a couple of Youtube videos and reading some "cheat" sheet books). Why does this happen?Of course, because everything is available to start and experiment. The only difficulty appears to be to create an account... Anyway, digital marketing alone is a huuge field and PPC is too. Even experienced marketers cannot rest assured that they are always up to date and this can be confirmed by everyone in the field. Friendly advice: if you don't want to put your reputation in danger as a web designer (i assume you are good at it) just don't engage with aspects of digital marketing that need literally years to master. Now if you are thinking of partnering with someone or even hiring them then go for it: clients love a one stop shop and "packages".

There are a lot of other little add-ons that you could offer as well. Some of these things are included in the web design process for many designers and their clients, but it varies from one designer or agency to the next

    SEO
    PPC
    Any kind of traffic service
    web development

the connection is obvious - people build websites to be seen and used by people.

for most web designers adding these services is probably critical...most of them are constantly looking to get work because they are unemployed after each job is finished (and due to everyone claiming or being a web designer work is hard to come by)

Definitely upsell marketing / graphic design services. Have an RV dealership client who I sold on weekly email blasts. Charge for the copywriting, the design of the graphics and the email itself.

Years ago I used to run a small design company. We set up a lot of people with ecommerce sites and sorted out their online merchant account.

The online merchant accounts were all set up on an affiliate partnership basis.

It turned out to be serious long term money and I still get paid on them to this very day.

SEO, Social Media Management, PPC, Blogging are all good options for upselling depending on what you are comfortable and confident with.

Lets start with the most basic upsell... Hosting. Hosting with unlimited changes at $50 to $100 a month adds up over time as you ad clients. 10 clients at $50 a month is $500. 20 clients and you are pulling 1k every month. That is for most enough to pay rent and most the bills ( depending on geography of course ).

I charge $100 a month that includes some local SEO work... and I have a "few" clients... and this residual income alone pays my families monthly expenses and then some.. and then some.

First of all, you should decide if you are going to upsell only your own services and skills, or you are about to hire other professionals. I don't recommend you learning new specialities and becoming an expert in everything. Because mostly it means that you are not good enough in each of them. I'd suggest you keep becoming better at your own field, just keep widening your skills.
As a web designer, you can offer branding services to your client, starting with drawing a logo for him and finishing with providing him with all branding materials that exist (presentation templates, logos, watermarks, templates for social media posts etc.).
If you want to do Marketing as an upsell, better hire people who already expertise in it and charge them for some percent for giving them warm contacts.
