How to incentivize my current customers to refer new customers?

I recently began working for a retailer for a large wireless provider. My position is 100% commission. I would like to provide an incentive for customers that have purchased from me to refer family and friends back to me. I was thinking of a few ideas, but I wanted to bounce these off of this community since you're probably a lot more experienced in this area than I am.

The referral will be earned if my customer refers someone to me and the person they refer activates new service or upgrades their existing phone.

My initial thought was a gift card to my business. I was thinking $5 or $10. The gift card could be used to make purchases in the store, such as accessories, etc. Also, if they rack up enough referrals, they would have a collection of gift cards to use. I did bounce this idea off an associate and he thought it was a good idea because "...people like something tangible..." The downside to a gift card is that this doesn't require them to do business with me. They can use the gift card with anyone at the store. Also, a gift card to allow purchases of accessories, etc. from my store may not really be a big thing because most people would buy their accessories (phone case, chargers, etc.) when they purchase the phone.

Pay a portion of their phone bill. Maybe $5 or $10 per referral.

Instead of a gift card to my business, I could give a gift card to a local business. I'm in a small town and we do have a few chain businesses, but we also have a few "Mom & Pop" businesses. I was thinking of a local coffee shop. I know the owners and have a good relationship with them, but me giving gift cards to their business will be benefiting their business and not mine.

With all of the above, I was also thinking of limiting it to a certain period, such as ".... maximum of x gift cards per y days..." (30, 60, 90, 180, or something like that).

I am open to your feedback.

Thank you.

Referral programs are the best way to get referrals and also some will refer you as well according to your specialty. So if you want to get new referrals then you should join any of referral program. From there you will connect with so many people who have the same experience which you are looking for or they may refer you according to your skills.

What are some examples of "referral programs"?

I have attended BNI and other networking groups, if that's what you mean. I haven't joined BNI, yet, but I do intend on doing so. It might just be down the road a little before I'll be able to join.

I've never paid for a referral in our cleaning business. For us it is a matter of underpromising and overdelivering and forming genuine relationships that drive people to tell their friends about us on their own. Make people excited about dealing with you because you take such good care of them and show genuine personal interest. Now, you aren't in their home like us, and you have limited time with a customer, but can you find some way to apply this principle? Just something that worked for us. We provide a different experience than many cleaners. How can you create an experience that is surprising and better than usual?

Shouldn't you first be talking about this with the retailer, the owner of the business?

If it's a franchise or a distributorship, They have an agreement with the service provider. There may be limitations on incentives and promotions that can be provided. Violating those may cost the owner his distributorship.

If it's a company owned store, there are strict rules concerning anything to do with tariff filings. The fines can be severe.

You may want to do some investigating before jumping in head first.

Honestly, the BEST way to get more out of your client base is to CALL THEM...Maybe hire a high school intern, with a sweet voice, who calls as your assistance just to get some quick feedback...Have them call from an iphone with a good number...The reason for this is if the client says that now is not a good time, ask for the better time, and then have the girl text them to let them know that we will call them then...

Have her call to inquire about the service, how they like it, and lastly, do they know anyone else who might be interested?...If they say yes, and they get the info, I'd recommend having that same girl call and schedule your appointment...

This could also be a virtual employee..
