Charge for a book or make it free?

Dan Kennedy says if you want to be seen as an expert, your book is the best foundation to start with.

Do you guys think it's better to charge a nominal amount, or make it free? I see charging as better positioning, but lacking the increased exposure of a free giveaway book.

    Charge for the book on Amazon, but give it away as a gift to highly qualified prospects.

    The mistake many make is thinking that if you give the book away for free, you'll have lots of takers. Free offers require the same quality of copywriting as a paid offer.

    Who cares what Dan Kennedy says.

    Good grief, get over the "I can't think without a guru" nonsense.

    Your job is to split test 50/50 on your own traffic and learn from your own data, not Dan Kennedy's traffic from 1984.

      Hey, hey, hey! Dan Kennedy did not say you have to give it away for free or that you have to charge for it. He said that being an author gives you prestige, which helps you get clients.

      Don't know why people who read Dan Kennedy do not get the whole thing he says or do what Dan Kennedy does/did. Specifically, you can buy Dan's books on amazon.com and in your local book store; you can buy all his stuff, but he gives some of it for no money, just an email address.

      And, Dan Kennedy was/is quite fond of testing, then testing some more and then testing some more, till you cannot get any more. Then test some more.

    You don't really even need to give the book away. The fact that you can point to a book as an author is the point. It positions you as an expert, and someone who gives advice VS someone who gives a pitch.

    There is still the belief out there that being an author makes you an expert, and that you are a quasi-celebrity.

    It isn't that Kennedy is a guru. It's that he is currently successfully using books as a lead magnet. And his book sales give the best quality and most profitable sales (as a group).

    So he has tested that and is still testing it.

    And I know that the book buyers of my own books are by far the best leads. Through testing, I also found out that the paperback buyers are far better leads than the Kindle book buyers.

      Yes, OP is stuck in guru mode and has a several threads that are all Dan Kennedy said this, Dan Kennedy said that, Dan Kennedy farted, I can't do anything without Dan Kennedy. Ugh.

        I think saying I'm stuck in guru mode is a false frame. This is a discussion forum. It makes sense to parse, examine, and discuss what the gurus say. These programs are not short so I wouldn't say making multiple threads about Dan Kennedy is a reliable tell that I've turned my brain off (far from it when I'm asking questions and also silently implementing).

        If you have a specific issue with one of my threads, please do point it out. This broad complaint can't be taken seriously though.

      I have to agree with you that from my own testing, the purchasers of my paperback book, purchase more of my backend products.

      People usually tend to keep paperback books on bookshelves where they are constantly reminded of your credibility many years after they have purchased your paperback and hardcover books

    I say charge $1 for it, or even less. From my experience, it gets the buyers. It's much easier to get someone to buy again when they have already made a purchase from you.

    As animal44 rightly said, you could mention a price on your book cover page but offer for FREE to few of your selected prospects. You can try it for few days/weeks and change your strategy accordingly - make it absolutely FREE or start start charging depending upon your prospect's reacyion.

    If you set it free, it's a FREEBIE. And you can give them with an opt in page.

    But i think it has to cost to have a real value in amazon or etc.

    SO.... DO BOTH!

    Put the book in amazon store, and give it for free for people who come in touch with your opt in page, so you can have double use and make money as well.

    i have written 3 books.
    If the book is to make you an authority start FREE until you get a bit of reputation and then make it super affordable.
    Nobody makes money from Books, but you make from the authority that brings to your biz.
