How to succeed as an online marketer. My own experience.

So first thing first.
I don't know everything. But I do listen to people that truly can inspire me.
This technique is expensive and requires you to have "balls". But it works.
I was told by a friend of mine for years to do that, but I was afraid. You take it anyway you want. All I can say, it works for me. But you need to make your own decisions.

I was told to rent a nice office and clients will come. "If you build it they will come" Field of Dreams.

For those that live in Southern California, you will know the place.
I rented a nice high-end office in Malibu California. Ocean view from all offices. Beautiful!
My life has changed. So once you in an office building, preferably high end, your neighbors need your services. My neighbors are all in the movie industry, or music industry. So that was a start.
But that's not what is really important. The important part is when we call business owners and we tell them we are in Malibu, immediately they listen and respect us (in most cases).
And for those that actually come to meet with us in our office....93% closure rate.
We don't go to their offices. "You want my service? You come here"

This is 180 degrees of where I used to be. You see, I used to go to small business owners, offer them web development, SEO Social Media and so on. And what happen there? In there office? They are not focused, they get calls all the time, employees coming in and out and I was just a guy that annoyed them. I felt miserable. I hated it.
Now? I have the upper hand. You walk into my office, these are my rules and you play by my rules....
Guess what? IT WORKS!!!!!!
They come in, we usually have one meeting and we get paid on the first meeting. Before? I used to have three meetings and begging to get paid.

I know it may sound crazy, but it works.

For those who live in the Los Angeles area, hit me up, stop by, lets try to brainstorm to bring more business.

I hope this post will inspire someone to take action.

    Hi M,

    I guess if you are clear on it, the strategy works for you.

    For me, I don't do the upper hand or lower hand bit. I do the hug. I meet folks halfway, literally sometimes, but since I tend to live in the tropics in places like Fiji and Bali and Thailand and Costa Rica, metaphorically. Works for me because instead of closing numbers, I help human beings, have fun and don't feel the tension and lower energy drivers that often cause us to do the us versus them thing.

    Whatever floats your marketing boat.

    The reason this gamble worked is you were in an environment that made success possible, ie. being around affluent buyers. Try doing that in the middle of nowhere and see what it gets you ;-)

    But branding yourself as "one of us" in that environment was a good idea. Glad it worked out.

        Sure, that is all Money Tolerance stuff. I am reassessing my thoughts because of your post here. I've come back to this thread several times. If you get a nice office in the sticks, you might do just fine. Surrounding prospects who match up do help. But there are other success factors. Making the leap to having an office could be the ignition to confidence.

        I could see some people sitting in their nice rented office, wondering why the customers don't come.

        I can also see other people springboarding off their decision to get it, and using that energy to go out there and get the customers.

        There are a zillion ways to succeed and for the OP this is one that worked. People have built large businesses in small towns. So while it's helpful that good prospects were close by, I have to say it's probably not "the" factor that made the business a success.

    One of the reasons that I was able to put a boatload of money away was keeping all major, unnecessary expenses to a minimum. I guess I could have opened an office near the Jersey Pine Barrens, but I wasn't looking for deer as clients.

    There is no greater joy than having a nice, comfortable, well-equipped office that comes along with the mortgage payment, that has a beautiful view overlooking the lake.

    When I lived in Manhattan I also kept an office at home, saving thousands of $$$ per month. This is a very common practice in NYC and prospective clients never give it a second thought.

    Let's face it, CA, especially, SoCA is a unique environment. Glad that's working out for you.

      All the nuances in business keeps things interesting.

      The OP has the office space in SoCal looking at the office and it works because he incorporates it into what he is trying to do.

      I used to read an investment letter where the guy advertised how he lived in the middle of nowhere and spent "your money" obsessively tracking down the best deals in the world uninterrupted, not on office space in New York.

      In Oran Klaff's book he talks about Wal-Mart and their set up. Basically it is designed to make sellers feel like nothing so they succumb to the pricing pressure that the buyers are going to put on them.

      There are IM gurus that make it look like they are living life on the beach with no employees while working a few hours a week when the opposite is the case.

    The single greatest medical advancement was that doctors stopped making house calls and you had to come to them. The second greatest medical advancement was the appointment.

    The reason it words so well when you get people to come to you (you already know some of this) is that they don't have distractions...but even more useful is that they see that you are substantial...a real business.

    And psychologically, once they invest in the trip, the natural inclination is to just follow your advice.
    After all, what professionals make you come to them? Doctors, Dentists, Lawyers...people whos' advice you follow.

    And bringing people to your location works everywhere.

    What would be interesting to know is...how do you get them to come to you? Is it a conference, seminar? How do you prospect? Is it just online? by speaking to groups? cold calling?

    I believe it, and no disrespect intended but most people buy partially based on perception.

    It's like advertising in GQ magazine (does it still exist?), the readers are going to automatically assume whoever has ads in the magazine are high end and on the same level as the GQ articles/subjects.

    Posturing, confidence, your commitment - all have led to this success.

    More than a decade ago I did the same with really beautiful office space.
    When my clients were being served coffee by my assistant in the boardroom awaiting my arrival I would of had to do something major to NOT get the deal.
    I had also been featured in the news, so image and location helped me explode my business from a few clients to hundreds of the best know companies around.

    Today I enjoy a more nomadic lifestyle and have been able to replicate much of this by simply having sales funnels that filter and set the tone. Nobody ever speaks with me that has not watched some sort of online presentation, opted in, taken a survey so we can make best use of our time, then booked an appointment with calendly. Upon booking my assistant follows up to confirm and clarify any elements from the survey. By the time we actually chat the tone and close rate is pretty close to my initial office setup. NOTHING beats in person for me, but pretty close and I get to travel...

    It is also VERY critical to note that the above process is not about me being all that and a box of chocolates. By doing it this way all parties have what they need for maximum value to be delivered. Sometimes I have soled their problem with a 10 minute call and we just part as great new contacts for future business and referrals.

    Again didn't try to brag about anything. No I am not driving a fancy car, or anything like that.
    This is not just another WSO promise.
    It just a better way of doing business. It makes you look legit. That element help me to convert leads into paying customers. Thats it. All the rest I still need to work (for living) :-)
