Newspapers U.K. Vs US

Hi WF,

I am planning to set up a vitamin business in weight management, joint and other topics like this either in U.K. or US, however I don't hold an SSN to get a local merchant account and being from the UK. seems a lot easier to get a merchant account. But I have some concerns if you experts and help...? I'm driving myself insane to work out the pros and cons.

Let's say If the price of advertising in newspapers in US and UK were the same and let's forgot about the size of US compared to U.K. is there any real cons as to why I shouldn't start a vitamin business in U.K. via newspaper? Is there anything else I might have missed?

What would be your pros and cons?

    You should get a copy of the 'toilet paper entrepreneur' by Mike Michalowicz.

    Don't drive yourself insane.

    Place a tiny ad (read cheap) in a UK paper and test it.

    Do the same in a US paper.

    You don't have to fulfill any orders...you just want to know

    1. Do people respond?
    2. Do enough respond to make a business?

    You could do a bigger ad if you have a budget...but you need to get real.

    What if you place a big, well designed (in your opinion) advert.....and....tumbleweed....crickets...no one responds??

    Better to know now than after you've got stock/infastucture/office..........

    Who is your specific audience.? Do they read the newspapers?
    Newspaper readership is tending to drop, so might not be your best avenue...
    Different newspapers will give different results. Sun readers might not be interested in vitamins, Guardian readers might.

    Might be better targeting specialist magazines, groups, clubs etc.
