Does proximity marketing actually work (in the UK)?

Hi all,

I've been reading about proximity marketing recently, and decided to wander around 2 city centres with my bluetooth enabled, to see what pops up.

Nothing.

Not one notification.

Is proximity marketing popular enough for me to have seen something? Is there some privacy law in the EU that means it can't be used? Am I doing something wrong?

Any ideas?

Regards,
Andy

Proximity marketing has nothing to do with Bluetooth. Facebook, Yes... a stores APP, Yes... Google maps, Yes.

      Hello savidge

No, Proximity Marketing via Bluetooth does exist. When you sell this service you are providing a small broadcasting unit to the particular store or business for them to broadcast their message, which might be instore or in close proximity to their store.

We sell this service in the US, havn't really looked into it over here in UK. Maybe we should before some Scotsman does !!!!

      Cheers

Yes it is Bluetooth technology that is used in the communication between the beacon and the device per say. BUT you cant just turn on Bluetooth on your device and have it work.

There are basically 2 platforms worth looking at in todays market space there is "iBeacon" from apple that transmits to devices with the Apple store app AND active location services turned on. and there is Eddystone that again requires an app.

So does the technology use "Bluetooth"? yes.. can you get the function of the technology by turning Bluetooth on, on your device without a proper APP? NO

          Hello Savidge

K, now I understand what you meant. I'm not really up on that tech even though we are selling the service. I know it is easier with android then with iphones

We are also using a similar system from GoMobile Solutions that uses Geo Targeting. Again I'm not really up on the technology behind it but it it gets the advertising ID of the mobile from around 200,000 apps from play store and app store then allows us to serve up ads to any mobile within the target area who are using those apps. Target area in this case can be a lot larger than the range of the beacons, and we can specify the distance from our clients location. This is going through the cell phone towers.

Sorry my knowledge on these techs is a bit sketchy, my staff know more about it then I do. I'll use the excuse that I am a blonde!
