Transition into Outside Sales Rep?

Good morning and thanks in advance for any guidance.
I have been a successful entrepreneur for most of my life (61 yrs) At this point, I could retire but I enjoy being productive and challenging myself.

I think that I would enjoy the challenge of outside sales. I am focusing on green technology, perhaps solar energy, since I am passionate about the environment.

While I don't have much history working directly in sales, if you know anything about being an entrepreneur, you know that it involves some type of sales 24/7.

My biggest concern is that I don't want to kill myself with long hours-I want to enjoy a varied life at this point. And while I am a US citizen, I may want to spend some time (winters?) each year in Latin America where I have a home and friends.

I am guessing that a company looking to hire in sales will not look favorably upon my desired lifestyle due to their financial outlay, so I am leaning towards being an independent rep.
While I know that my maturity, experience, and integrity would be an asset to a business, I wonder how just how crazy are my plans? Does anyone have suggestions of how to proceed?

Thanks again for all help!

You could be a closer for any number of third party agencies. They bring you leads on behalf of their client, and you make the sale of that client's offer in exchange for a % of the revenue. It's an increasingly common business model as many people think they have what it takes to start such a business...but I would filter for those founders who understand supporting their reps and providing well-qualified leads are key.

As long as you have a good internet connection you can do this role.

    .

Choose a company which doesn't hire sales people. But there are products and services which are more DEMONSTRATION oriented. It is more of a show and tell, rather than a try to sell situation.

And the green eco companies are well suited for this. But to fulfill your goals, being hired is not what you want, you'll surrender too much time and freedom. Look for a distributor opportunity which has minimum requirements to retain your territory, or better yet an opportunity you can take with you anywhere you go.

Since you are passionate and have the Entrepreneur background, consider a new career as a GREEN CONSULTANT.

At the lower end, there are water conservation companies targeted to the consumer.

At a higher end, there are those consultants working with big companies, and there is a lot of EMPLOYEE education, maybe you could offer workshops and seminars on site for those people. Bigger companies will pay more. And of course, there is your own background, in whatever you have done, probably other similar businesses all over who could use your expertise.

As a consultant, or call yourself an Auditor, do Green Audits of business, gov't. OR something less formal, like an appraiser. You simply do an appraisal of the business, and then you scale it up, by training others to become appraisers, so you spread the word, help others make money, and you visit whatever country you want...and bring along not only a eco friendly philosophy, maybe you bring a business opportunity with you too.

    Good luck.

PS Pick a product which you only have to show and tell, without any selling involved.
