Who's starting a new business?

Much less activity here, in the smartest part of the forum , since I checked in last.

I posted upstairs and of course got crickets.

What are you working on? And I'll start with two of the fundamentals as questions:

1. Who's your ideal customer?

2. What's your traffic source?

Let's not even get into Offers yet, because that would be out of order for experienced professionals.

I actually have started a new business...slightly outside of my wheelhouse, but also, right smack dab in the middle of what I'm excellent at.

    1) 55+

    2) 55+ community resources - Since my original elbow bump, I've closed 200
which puts my advertising and product directly and in the face of 500,000
55+ in FL, NJ, NY, CA and, I'm just getting started.

I am thinking about launching a new business/product since I have an Instagram account with 5800 followers averaging 600 likes per post. I have no idea how to monetize it at this moment, age is 40+ and 83% woman.

  • Ideal customers are those who are happy with their purchase and try to come to you again. In a way, they join you and give good ideas about your bsuiness.

Honestly, starting up a business in this pandemic is already challenging enough and if you sustain your business, KEEP IT UP.

Are you serious? I recommend a better attitude! Sure, maybe you shouldn't be starting a conference business, or a restaurant, or a games center or anything dependent on groups of people physicially gathering together. But there are TONS of other business ideas to serve people who want to stay home... have an experience there... get things delivered... join online groups... learn things... get coached...

FDR, nothing to fear but fear itself... I think you may have snookered your own mind.

EDDM. Old news by now. ADs in the box have dwindled...local ValPak less than half of what was sent last year. Even weekly grocery ads, now down to a single page, and all kinds of other bad news for direct mail promotions...

        And yet...

A twist, a turn, a double axle or a triple double (if you are at a Biles level) and WHAMO SLAMO having money thrown at you (practically, I don't want too much hyperbole)

        BECAUSE

Local businesses need both new and old customers and nothing beats a strong offer delivered right to their door.

Although NOT a new business...offering promotional services is growing, exploding and easy to do from the Lazy Boy.

        So, I also agree with Jason, a G R E A T TIME to start or adjust a business.

PS Speaking of FDR, the Civilian Conservation Corps gave many a young man something productive to do during the hardest of times. It was somewhere between the Boy Scouts and the Army and it was a useful tool of the times.

Im not so sure what has been said here is so true... Start a restaurant or a conference? NOW is the BEST time to be doing these things... Because there is LESS EDDM right now.. NOW is the BEST time to be doing this.

When the economy turns, what is the first expense most small to mid business' cut? We all know the answer.. advertising. When there is a shift in consumer wants who is best to meet those needs - a new or young business or an old established one? Again we know the answer to that.

I preach this on the regular.. like its my job... ( oh wait, it is my job LOL ) Its not about adapting a business.. it is about meeting the needs of the consumer. The idea sounds trivial, but really think about it. Adapting what you already have to "work" vs understanding the consumer base and straight up changing how you present your business to meet those needs.

Chik fil a is a great example of this.. they have increased business during these times. They are building drive thru only facilities and have what appears to be abandon the notion of sit in dining. They quickly brought in the tech and the systems to not have a single line of customers but 2 and 3 in some cases. They are so good at the logistics of processing an order in todays world that they are making their managers available to state and local agencies to help them set up for drive thru testing and vaccinations. ( there are many news articles on this )

They didnt adapt and cry whoa is me we cant have people in our restaurant... they took what was available, made it stream line as all get out and went all in - and from where I am sitting its damn impressive. They have increased sales quarter over quarter from last year - how many restaurants can say that? a quick comparison... Mcdonalds lost about 2% last year ( year over year 19 and 20 ) and Chik Fil A had 25%+ growth.

So a real world example of a company I work with. An art studio that teaches art classes. business should have just fell apart right? Right now they are doing classes 2 days a week. Sign up online and pay.. Stop buy before the class day and pick up the project pack with all the materials to do the project and then the class is done over Zoom virtually. The growth has been a staggering 400%. Pre covid was the crap years of this business. Covid for this business was a blessing - as well as many other business'

Opportunity only knocks once.. and usually lightly.

The SHIFT that needs to be looked at is NOT how to get customers to the business.. but how to get your business to the customer. and it is THIS that is the great struggle.

Remove the word "Instant" from your vocabulary... understand it is a process and takes time and be patient and consistent, and you will succeed.
