SMS Marketing - Offer to Local Businesses Offline

To all your offline marketing gurus here, I wanted to know if any of you are promoting sms marketing to local businesses. I am very intrigued by this form of marketing as it is still in the early stages here in the U.S. We do know that money is in the list and along with setting up auto responders for local businesses, why not promote sms marketing to them as well.

The 3 types of businesses that would definitely profit from this are restaurants, beauty salons and bars. They can guage their ROI and once they build a list, they can surely start seeing some good profit.

Do you think sms marketing can be sold to local businesses? Would love to hear your thoughts and hopefully some success stories. Thanks

    Hi Kelly,

There are many businesses that would benefit greatly from SMS Marketing. From Comedy Clubs texting out their weekly line-ups to your local hardware store, texting you that your screens you brought in for repair are ready for pick-up.

Plumbers, Landscapers can text service reminders...
Florists can text birthday, holiday or aniversary reminders...
Local Pizza shops can text discounts to those on their list...
Dentists can text appointment reminders or even payment due notices...

    It really is endless...

I offer it but few have signed up yet. I believe it's one of those things that local buisness owners need a little more education on or proof that it's working...

It will be the marketing platform of the future though...

Anything related to mobile marketing I always looking up Melody, a fellow warrior member has her own text message service which is quite good...worth looking into. Look her up for more info:

      Hi Ken!!

Just happened to catch this and thought I better hop in here!

First of all - thanks for the kind words! Greatly appreciated!

Unfortunately - we just closed down the service last month when BOTH of our back end service providers raised our prices so high we couldn't compete with the 'big guys' anymore. Very frustrating after all the work we had put in, as you can imagine.

There are a lot of businesses that could profit from it - but we were really surprised at the resistance that we encountered with the local businesses. Our entire team is VERY experienced in sales - with a very diverse background and in some very tough niches - but we all ran into similar issues in different markets.

The bottom line was that we have other businesses that were making a great deal more with less effort - so when the suppliers jacked up the rates - we basically bailed.

That being said - drop me a PM, and I will send you some more info and resources. I have a lot of good stuff here!

In my experience with selling to offline businesses, you'll have an easier time selling services that business owners are already familiar with, like web design and SEO services.
The more foreign the technology from their perspective, the better a job you have to do of educating them about what it can do for them and why it can produce a good ROI for their business.

Not saying you can't sell them services they're not familiar with. I'm just saying that having a website and being on the first page of search engines is already part of many business owners' worldview as something desirable because they've been hearing it over and over again. They've already been programmed by advertising, colleagues, etc. that they should have these things, whereas something like an autoresponder strikes them as something unknown and potentially risky.

In other words, SMS marketing may sound new and cool, but you need to be able to show them some sort of "proof" that it can work for them, or you'll meet with resistance. If you have some success stories of people who are using SMS marketing successfully and you incorporate that into your presentation, or you can present it to them in a way that removes any perceived risk on their part, that may be a starting point. Just be sure not to make any specific guarantees as to what kind of results you can produce for them.

I have offered sms marketing for about 4-6 weeks now. I have had great success so far with it. My clients do see a ROI , and I offer the service at a reasonable price. Most Important is you have to research your provider and MAKE SURE they are using TRUE sms messaging, otherwise most the messages will be considered spam and probably never get seen. If you want to know some good providers for sms marketing , pm me.

      Hi rdraiss,
I am thinking of jumping into this industry. I want to enter as a white label/reseller. Can you give me an idea of how you are approaching these businesses and what type of businesses have you seen the most success with. Also if you don't mind, can you give me an idea of your package prices. Any info would be Greatly appreciated. Thank you

    Good morning Kelly,

Here are a few white label / re-sellers. I have not used them myself so i can't vouch for them, but to gather info & pricing comparison they would be OK:

dotmobi - The internet mobile company

Mobile SMS Marketing - White Label Reseller Program

    Branded White Label Solution

Here is a "Mobi Best Practices" PDF that have a lot of useful info...

    http://www.mobilemarketingwatch.com/...tpractices.pdf

Here are some free "mobi site builders"....useful to offer to offline clients, easy to use.

    dotmobi mobile site builder#

Mobile Web Site Builder - Build a mobi site

    Hope that helps...

Hi everyone - I am out of the office for a couple of days, so responding by iphone - so will keep this brief - 2 of the companies that Ken mentions above are actually the same company - Promo2cell & mobileSMSmarketing. We used them for part of our system and to say it was difficult is an understatement - happy to share experiences and resources when I get back, unfortunately, this is one of the few companies that actually does a (more or less) white label platform that won't cost 100k to get into.

If you just want to resell a very good program as basically an affiliate - you might want to look at the Trumpia.com program as the company is larger and has much better support and technical resources than the one above.

There is a market for the services - but it was simply not the best use of our time, considering the time vs profit ratios. A lot depends on what you need your return to be - at age 55, I expect to get a pretty high return on my time ;-) and this was just not meeting my criteria.

Will PM anyone interested a bunch of things when I get back to the home computer -

I have looked at mobilesmsmarketing and also at anchormobile.net

Anchor mobile is part of mobile sms but the person incharge of the private label program is very knowledgeable and helpful. It does not cost an arm and a leg to get a private label program with them but I am surprised to hear that you had a difficult time with them. I would love to hear more about your experience with them.

They were the only solution I found that was afforadable but hearing your experience with them makes me think otherwise as I really wanted to start working with them.

Mobile Marketing seems to be up and coming but businesses have to be educated on this type of marketing. They are so used to traditional marketing methods and it is our job as offline marketers to show them the potential that exists with other forms of marketing. I am seriously considering getting a white label program with a company and start to use this in my consulting arsenal.

A company that does very well with this is redbox. It's that movie rental kiosk that put Blockbuster out of business. For example, every 1st monday of the month, they send out SMS with a free movie coupon to people who sign up online. It's a great way for them to get new customers. That's how they got me! They offered something free, I liked it so when I wanted more of their products, I didn't mind paying for it. Not to mention, their prices are the lowest around for movie rentals. Genius business model. I'm sure other businesses could duplicate it and be successful too.

SMS Marketing is really starting to catch on. We started our company about a year ago and have noticed a big up swing in the last half of 2009 as far as adoption.

We just finished up a campaign for Ford and The Houston Texans and are looking to tap the small to Med sized company market. We have developed a very low cost method of effectively using SMS text marketing.

If you are looking to explore the business, we are looking for marketing partners. Please feel free to contact me.

I'd be interested to know what methods you use to promote the service to offline businesses because it's going to be new to them.

Do you convince them of the ROI?

Do you let them try it out?

How do you help them implement it?

    Interesting topic.

    Cheers,

    All:

I've been in mobile for about 10 years now. I'm so happy to see that it's finally taking off. As everyone has stated education seems to be the biggest hurdle (not for long) but I think the few sub par technologies and training courses is really taking a toll on people. If anyone has any questions about anything related to mobile marketing and advertising I'd be more than happy to answer them.

Since I keep running into a ton of people who have had serious issues with CPCash and I keep having to help undo the damage I've decided to help out in a major way. A couple of other people here in the forum have asked me to share my experience in mobile marketing with everyone. I started writing a book about mobile marketing a long time ago and just finished and copyrighted it. Since I would like the feedback on my book I am willing to share it with anyone that wants an advanced copy.

I hate to tell you that's it over 200 pages long (and I still have more information that held back on), but I really put a lot into it. Just PM me and I'll send you a copy of it. Please keep in mind that this book is about 'mobile marketing' and not 'mobile advertising'. There is a major difference. I will create another book/video/content package about mobile advertising in about two months.

For USA I offer SMS marketing with unlimited messages, unlimited subscribers for $99/month. I would like to be able to offer it to other resellers and I built the system for that, but not sure about what pricing I would need to sell it for so that others can go sell for a profit. Millard,
i just ran a post on this yesterday...Checking warrior interest.. Got very little feedback.

How about Unlimited Texting, with 10 keywords, and Your Total Cost is $199 a month.

      You would then...

be able to set up 10 clients billing between $150 and $750 per month.

Each client would have like Text the word Restaurant to 55544
      or Pickle to 55544

      Boise Tire to 55544

      Millard to 55544

Each additional Keyword is $25 per month.

I am launching this platform in less than 30 days with the most
successful Text Aggregator in the USA.

We actually always offer a free trial as we found it to be the best solution to get prospects to go into the platform and make a well informed decision as to whether or not to move forward.

As a matter of fact, we just launched a series of tutorial videos which you can view on our blog.

No, each text message that goes out has no Trumpia branding whatsoever regardless of whether it is sent via Trumpia directly or through one of our resellers. The only name identified on the text message is the organization or business sending out the message.

I'd really recommend our trial so you can get a hands on feel for the platform, and of course I'd be more than happy to assist you with any questions you have in regards to Trumpia and mobile marketing.

SMS marketing may sound new and cool, but you need to be able to show them some sort of "proof" that it can work for them, or they will meet with resistance. If they have some success stories of people who are applying SMS marketing successfully and they incorporate that into your presentation.

Agreed, nothing works better than proof before persuasion and there are 2 ways you can accomplish this with SMS marketing.

      1. You can build your own list of local customers who would be interested in deal from local businesses and send them out on behalf of your potential clients.

      2. You can offer a free trial to your client and help them build their database and then show them how this will bring more traffic in their doors.

      Hope that helps!

The best way this has worked for me is to offer a free trial. Get them to take baby steps first - its easier.

My company has been offering text marketing and if you have a good client base then you will do fine. The biggest hurdle is that a lot business owners question if it can work. We take more of a consulting approach to show our value when working with our text marketing clients.

It seems that most sms marketing service has raised their prices in the past 6-7 months. The quality is the same, they all use short codes for great delivery, it is just a matter of pricing now
