"Super Size" your Offline Marketing

If you use MindMaps in your sales presentations, consider printing them in a larger size that you can do on your own printer. The larger size adds a bunch of credibility, and gives a "WOW" that 8.5" x 11" just won't do. This is true for other marketing materials as well.

You can get individual pagess printed at Kinko's, but they'll be $22+ for 18" x 24".

If you plan ahead and can deal with the UPS ground shipping, Shortrun Posters might be a better alternative. They have flat-rate shipping of $10 for any size order, and posters are $2 each at their lowest price. I just placed my first order, and their online system was very easy.

The only things to remember when sending things to them (or Kinko's for that matter) is that output size and resolution matters. Shortrun's output is at 17x23, and they suggest a minimum of 150 dpi at that size - 300 dpi is best.

They accept many different formats, including PDF, so as long as you work with the end size in mind, you should have no problem.

If you don't have any MindMapping software yet, you can either go to bubbl.us and use their web-based software or do a search for FreeMind on Google - FreeMind is an open source program that will do most everything that the commercial programs will.

I personally don't find mindmaps to be that useful with offline clients. Sure, they have their place and can be integrated into the consulting process (as when you are building one out from scratch with/for a client), but as part of a sales pitch or presentation, I think that they can do more harm than good as they add a layer of complexity and a way of thinking/viewing the opportunity that is sometimes "overwhelming" for a prospect.

Now, for an IMer who needs a lay-of the land and a tool to help them keep track of where to go and what to do next, mind maps are great, especially for offline.

However, Kelly's idea to have a "Wow factor" poster is brilliant. It could be a mind-map, it could be your proprietary process or it could be a series of stats, etc.

I completely agree. I've found clients to be uninterested in the granular detail that's in a MindMap.

I don't know what to call what I use now. It's a cross between a MindMap (minus much of the detail) and a marketing document.

It's large, full-color, and looks very professional. My prospects have never seen anything like it before - not even close.

One of the places I use for 4-color printing is clubflyers dot com (not an affiliate).

They will print 500 posters 12x18 for $325. (That's 70 cents per poster) You can fold those to go into a large mailing envelope, or roll them for use in a mailing tube.

Design a sales letter (snail mail) to go with the color poster, and suddenly you look different than any other offers they are getting about web design.

One client should be enough to pay for it, and you can mail 10 or 20 or 50 a week without breaking the bank.
