How can one utilize keyword research using Market Samurai, Wordtracker, Google Keyword Tool, etc. for finding opportunities OFFline? When would it be possible and when would it be impossible?

Just try typing in a city name + a type of business. For example: "Chicago Plastic Surgeons" and see what kind of results you get and if anyone is even searching for it.

That particular one would probably be very competitive, but just to give you an example.

Sometimes its hard to get a figure for local businesses. My city is about 100k people so search volume is low and sometimes GKWT wont give you a figure. But if you pick the broad terms such as "City Dentist" I think you will see good enough traffic.

Keyword research is keyword research, local or non local doesn't really change anything, it's still a keyword but we consider it 'local' when there is a geographical element to the keyword phrase, that's what makes it local.

So tools like Market Samurai don't change, all your doing is looking for keywords for different markets but always including some geo tag in the keyword (could be city, state, post code, whatever 'area' you want to target).

    Hi,

I wasn't sure if you were asking how to find new offline clients using keyword research, or how to complete keyword research for offline clients? I'm guessing the latter, so I'll offer a tip that might be useful for you.

One quick way to build good solid keywords for local clients is to use google's free keyword tool.

Step 1: Go to google.com and enter a your seed keyword and LARGE city.
I like to use Dentist for examples, so I might search google.com for "Dentist Chicago"

Reason being, I'm looking for a large city, heavy competition, solid "dentist" website that is ranked at the top. Jot that dentist's website url down.

Step 2: Go to google's keyword tool and enter the WEBSITE into the "website box" and hit search. Here's a screenshot from a random dentist site that I looked up (not affiliated in any way with this site)

Google offers "suggestions" for which keywords this page is relevant for along with search volume.

Step 3: Export and geo-tag each keyword with the city you're marketing for with your offline client.

    It's free.
    It's fast.
You will absolutely find keywords that will not come back in keyword searches like in MS or even with a google keyword search. Don't get me wrong, I still use those tools, but this method provides many other trickles, streams, and rivers of traffic that I would have missed out on.

    Hope that helps!

    Best,

    Will

I found this tool off someone's Sig file...it's pretty sweet for this thing b/c you can set a zip code (big one in Chicago for example) and it'll get the geo target keywords for you.

You enter the zip, radius, and business type and it spits it out for all the towns/cities. Pretty cool...and free

      Local Keyword Research Tool

      Cheers,

      Brad

I like that idea. I'm curious as to how much search volume terms like that actually get though. Wouldn't someone who is looking to get braces just type in "city name + dentist" as opposed to "city name + braces" since a dentist is the one who puts the braces on?

The OP asked the question, "how can one use keyword tools to find opportunities for offline businesses?"

The value of this exercise is what I wrote in the last paragraph of the post... by having Google's spider "look" at a dominating website within a specific industry, and analyze it for what GOOGLE thinks it is relevant for, you often find keywords that often are not returned in keyword research tools.

It's reversing the typical keyword research process in hopes to expose new traffic kw's you otherwise might miss. You now have Google suggesting keywords for top ranking websites, instead of you putting in seed keywords looking for KW's.

You then take those keywords and build out your client's websites with appropriate geo tags.

        Make sense?

Offline marketing has been around a lot longer than its online counterpart. There are pros to using this tried and true form of marketing. With offline marketing, you will only be sending out marketing to a certain area of the country. By knowing the people and where they live that you are marketing to, you can tailor your marketing to these people.
Another pro to offline marketing is that your potential clients often have something in their hand to see what your business has to offer. Potential clients like to have something material to have in their hand to make their buying choices with.
