If you get a client with a range of products and they want to get higher in Google with their website, but you don't know anything about the niche they are into, how can you solve this problem then? Without the right knowledge about the market, you want be able to write good content and use good keywords.

It all comes down to research.

Interview the business owner. Even if you thought you knew about their business, chances are there is something unique you didn't know about their USP. So, regardless you should find out more.

Create a standard template that has them describe their business and give keywords and other websites where their customers would visit.

Then you will have a ton to run with. If you are uncomfortable creating the content, then go with outsourced talent that can write on it.

      - Thanks. I thought about this one. But what can you do if the business owner and his only staff (one person) don't have the time to answer the interview questions? They both are very business on working days.

Create a standard template that has them describe their business and give keywords and other websites where their customers would visit.
      - Can you give me more information about this one please? What kind of template does it have to be? One to put on the web? Or a standard list of questions? And do you mean that I have to ask them for the keywords en the websites of their competitors? Is that what you're meaning?
If you are uncomfortable creating the content, then go with outsourced talent that can write on it.
-Yes, good option, but the copywriters have to have a good understanding of the business too, before they come up with something informative with good keywords and educational.

This is the key, really. Once you get a few ideas from the interview you will be ready to roll, for sure. In fact, I am often amazed at how quickly you can get rolling with an interview.

I might also suggest another tip---> interview the person at the business who has first contact with the customers (secretary for instance). Often their information is invaluable.

    I agree with Scott.

A simple question to you: If you don't even understand your client's business, how can you even think of any SEO or Niche Promoting Strategies???

If you are an established business person, you must understand your client and it's business first. That's what I think...

[quote=sax.sunny;2646267] Hi. Thanks for the comment.

But, I don't know anything of markets where offline businesses are into. Only online niches. So, I have to start somewhere, don't you think? I have to pick a business and learn about a market to get some knowledge. But things aren't to be going that easy if there aren't any forums or educational blogs with informative content in the market where I am into right now.

If you are an established business person, you must understand your client and it's business first. That's what I think...
So, where would you start if it was your goal to understand a business, a market. Research on the internet? And if so, how would you gain knowledge about particular cleaning products?

Well are you talking about doing research to approach businesses in a niche?

Are you talking about how to promote a business owner's products to their target market?

If it's the latter, then you should be asking the business owner all the questions...because if they don't know their own market's needs, frustrations, etc. then they have bigger problems than just promoting their business.

I use my interview cash method template whenever I'm working with a business owner or product creator that is looking for help in marketing their solution.

It all comes down to taking the time to ask the right questions and then matching that up with the 3 Ms for massively successful results (and really happens business owners =D )

If you are talking about simply helping them with search engine rankings, it just comes down to research. Start by reverse engineering the backlink profiles of the top three sites for their keywords and then look for common factors and patterns.

Then, just as if you were writing a paper for school, start researching. Research the industry, the products, how they do business, etc and start writing articles on the topic. I've learned things I never would even have considered by writing articles for clients.

Sometimes it's better that you don't have "inside" knowledge of the industry because you are approaching it as a potential customer would. People inside an industry sometimes use terminology that the average person would not know and never search on. So writing from a "fresh," but informed perspective can be good sometimes.

Pat Jackson posted a link to a report for someone on another forum that was really cool. It ran a report on the backlinks of the top five sites for a particular keyword, listed all the backlinking sites and whether or not they linked to each of the top five sites. It made it really easy to see where the authority hubs were. I'm not sure what he was using to generate that though.

You could interview the business owner, but a lot of times their views are jaded.

If you can, get access to the employees and talk to them, ask them questions. You will get much better "street" knowledge that you need to do your marketing.

      Good luck!

Interviewing the business owner is the best way to solve your problem because even though you are very smart one and have all the ideas rolling over your mind about the business but the owner itself has this other ways to do so then your's must be useless.

Its plain to see that all you have to do before start working with the said task is to gather all the informations and possible instructions as well as concept of the whole projects.

Determine the Problem look for a solutions then solve it.

Kinda obvious really, but of course you can use google keyword tools and others to artificially get a picture of the market. But then again, I think the best thing you can do is to just speak with your client

Market research. As a marketer specializing in integrated brand marketing and design, vs. an industry niche, I deal with this all the time. It is a challenge and takes more time to learn about their business and products, industry, customers, and online competitors.

One of the easiest ways to get to the heart of it is a forum. It seems these days people have all have forums where they talk candidly about their problems. I'd ask which ones your client is on and start there.

Misery loves company, so you can find all the struggles and lingo in about 1/10 of the time in my experience. That's my trick anyway. Most business's face the same problems. You just need a place where they lay them on the line.
