As someone just getting into this business I have a question.
Are you guys recommending blog sites or static sites to your offline business customer?
I know content is what the search engines like to see but it strikes me that Joe painter isn't going to want to be blogging or writing articles.... I could be wrong...

About them not wanting to blog or write articles...

This is where your upsell opportunity lies. Tell them that this content is important, tell them that you know they don't have the time to do do it, and tell them that you have a solution.

You can outsource the blog posts/articles if you need to.

Even when they choose not to utilize the blog feature, I still do static blog sites.

      Awesome, thanks for the advice!

Msmotivation1 - when you say you setup static blogs are you setting up a blog with a few posts and leaving it at that or do you mean something else?

Use wordpress because google loves wordpress and it's easier to manage. It doesn't matter what your client thinks it is, it can just be a website to them. You can get most wordpress sites now days to look like a mormal webpage. It's one of those things that your client cares about results, not really what the means to get there is.

Just because it's a blog you don't have to treat it like a blog with daily posts by your client. But a few articles of good content would be a great thing and you can charge more for that as well.

Have any of you experienced offliners ever offered a "buy out" package to a client if they wanted to take over the website and do the changes themselves?

If you're not going to be adding content regularly, and I can't see most clients wanting to do that, why not just build a simple website with a few articles? SEO optimized of course.

I use Weebly to create sites that have ranked in spot 1 on page 1 of Google for my keywords. I find the drag and drop interface so much more intuitive than using a Cpanel and all the themes and plug-ins or whatever they are that you need for Wordpress sites.

I'm sure I am in the minority here and I'm ready to take a beating!

    Hi Abru,

    "MY SELL to clients"

Basicly - WP blog, 5 pages total, first page static, 4 pages of clients customer user friendly stuff + one contact form.

Easy upsell here is maintenance - either blogposting or article writing services to keep the blog alive.

    Maint. invoicing 99 D/m and art.serv. - invoicing 400D/m

I outsource the main + art. writing in WF

Has the client already paid for the website or was it given for free ???

For free, I would charge 1000 D - or else, let him have it for a symbolic one time fee.

    regards, LASSE

Few of my clients have a blog and they all rank well. The real estate agents, fine, they'll do anything for a sale, but your painter, contractor, carpet cleaner and so forth will not want a blog so don't worry about it. The static sites rank well enough in the local markets without them.

That being said, using it as an upsell to outsource is a good option as others have indicated, but really, unless the client is in a market where their customers are interested in what they've got to say, such as a financial planner, then don't wast your time. Who cares about a painter's blog?

either way, online or offline business, you want to go with a wordpress blog platform just because it provides such a great way to build a site, and is customizable so it looks like a "regular" site rather than a "blog" site - hth
