Hey Warriors...this may be my first post ever here.

Anyway, what experiences, good and bad, do any of you have with creating your own local directory? Like with anything...you'll get out of it what you put into it, I'm sure, but what challenges have you come across?

What about themes...I'm a wordpress guy with no coding skill at all. I'm considering the DirectoryPress theme as well as the GeoPlaces theme. They both look like they are "easy" to set up and use, as well as configurable so that "users" can handle a bunch of stuff with my hands staying off.

My plan is not just a directory, but a content filled local authority site that happens to have a directory with it...making it the go to site for the area.

So, I guess my main question is, what experiences, good and bad do you have with these themes in particular and directories in general.

It will be a tremendous lead generation model for the other high dollar "consulting" that we offer.

That GeoPlaces theme just saved me a lot of work.

    I love this forum.

    Thanks for the information.

I like that theme, my programmer and I have been building a custom directory and it's definitely a lot of work, so if you can get something nice, out of the box like this it will save you a lot of time.

Niche directories can be real effective, especially if you can get them ranked. The hardest part of the sell is being able to prove that it gets traffic and the business will get calls. I worked with a company a couple years back that had bought thousands of niche yellowpage domains and tried to sell listings for like $3.95 / mo. They thought the price was so low, people would just sign up and forget about it...that didn't happen.

Hope it works out for you.
