Has anyone thought of pursuing a business degree offline?

Hey warriors,

I've got this question coming out to the people here who have a steady income stream based in IM.

Have you thought of pursuing an Under-grad or Grad degree in business?

I've been thinking along those lines for a while now. While I'm pursuing an Under-grad degree in Computer Science and Engineering, I really enjoy IM.
I hope to develop a full-time business out of it, combined with other things, someday.

With that in mind, I've been thinking of applying to some good Business schools around the world for a graduate degree in business administration.

Your thoughts?

It helps if you want the corporate life. Not that it can't help with valuable theory otherwise, but I would guess that most people on this site are more independent and entrepreneurial than corporate in their mindset.

Let me also add that it might help if you want to work WITH corporations, not just for them. Results are what matter in the end, but there are still a lot of companies out there that wouldn't even consider you for a consulting gig without a business degree (and often from a school that they themselves are impressed with).

I agree with your point there, about the "entrepreneurial streak".

What I'm curious about is the experience it could bring in...

That's a tricky one. Other than the post above who brings up the point of the status it brings and that some higher end clients might want it to be there, I would personaly say don't bother.

If you are truly wanting to build your IM or offline IM consulting biz then put your time and effort into that. The time and money you would spend getting your business degree could be spent learning in the real world and investing in making money now not getting that money back after 4 years or so.

Maybe some high end MBA might be worth it, but for the most part what you need to learn for this business you will find dealing with businesses and learning IM from the internet. I am saying all of this being someone who does have a business degree and am glad I have it in general, but in all honesty, it does not have anything to do with what I do today or how I make my money.

Just figure the cost of a 4 year business degree or a MBA and how long it will take you. Then figure how long it will take you to make that money back. The question should then be, how much can you make working now in the time you would be paying to go to business school. It's basically make money now without it, or maybe make more later with it after paying $80,000 or whatever to get it.
