You can't. Well at least with Google Places....

I am pretty sure that in most U.S. locations, Google has made it so that anything seo/marketing/web design does NOT show up/trigger local Places maps results.

Organic ranking you will have a tough/kind of worthless? time ranking for generic consultant keywords. If you are a local seo consultant, rank "yourtown consultant" in the natural results using typical onpage/offpage SEO processes?

      Hey Jim

Yeah we have that obscure and indecent rule here too.

It pretty much stinks in our book as it allows the people who were already placed in Google Maps/Places to be grandfathered across even though they haven't optimized the listings.

Anyway, we concur with your approach.

      Regards

I just ranked for the keyword "city marketing" since that was the only kw that had any searches (300+ month). Now I have 5 spots on the first page of google which is nice and a good credibility booster.

      Hey Rockstar

      Yep that works a treat.

Plus the 5 spots make them think you are just plain "Awesome".

The best reference is to show them that YOU are ranked on first page of google for "SEO Consultant" in your city & state.

In other words, (if you lived in Boulder CO) and a prospect types in 'SEO in Boulder Colorado' you should be both on the Google map and in organic listings.

    Get a domain like SEOGuyBoulderCO.com...

But for that there is required get accuracy to the blog.

I've had good luck with going for extreme long tail keywords. Things like 'Search Engine Optimization Pricing' have done really well for me.

The trick is to catch them in their 'research' phase, collect their email and close them. It's a little longer process, but it works like gangbusters.

My only question is: How many local businesses do you really think are looking for help using the term "search engine optimization pricing"?

Hell, 99% of them don't even KNOW what SEO is! Probably never even heard the term "SEO" unless you go to cocktail parties and throw the phrase around to impress folks.
But, you're not getting to the folks you need/want to.

Internet Consulting? Sure. Business Consulting? Sure. Even "City..." or "....City". But, surely not for "search engine optimization pricing", or anything else that says "SEO".

Don't forget, WE know what it means, but I'll bet you a dozen doughnuts that the average business owner does NOT have a clue.

As far as a "reference" goes, if you're getting a lot of local/area business for online SEO, websites, etc., you just point them toward non-competing sites, and explain to them the value of front page listing, etc.

      Just my 2ยข

Just do "city marketing". Create 2-3 45 sec videos with the kw in the title and description. Add the kw in your sites title and description. Create a merchant circle profile with the kw in the title and description also and in a few days or so you will have at least 1-2 front page listings. In 30-60 days you should have 3-4.
