Hey guys just starting out with local marketing I have had quite a lot of success with affiliate marketing but just really like the look of the offline model seems a lot more sustainable.

I was wondering for uk sites do people find .co.uk work better than a .com

Am looking at sites like PlumberInTown.com(.co.uk)

Also what are peoples thoughts on search volume for example would you build a site around a keyword with say 300-400 searches a month or would you be looking for more volume

    UKCARL,

Since you're targeting local businesses, I don't see where co.uk would be a problem, but why don't you just ask some of your friends? How do they search for things? That should give you a rough idea of which might work better.

I don't live in the UK so I don't have the exact answer but ask yourself this...

    Which is easier to remember?

    -or-

If people use both a lot in your country, which one do you see more readily used... when you look at local advertising do businesses have a .com or .co.uk address?

True but just because they use it doesn't mean its better I was hoping to hear from people who had had experience with using both and which they found ranked better

For the UK, .co.uk wins hands down, especially if you're going to be doing any backlinking.

One of the things you may want to consider apart from the domain TLD is hosting. For example you will almost certainly get better results in the UK for a hosting account based in the UK. The numbers really is a question of the value of each market. If you can get an exact domain match that will be easier to get a page one ranking this could be valuable to a plumber as in your example.

Honestly, both for my own sites and for my client's sites there is barely any difference between the .com and the .co.uk domain names. I would always advocate getting both domains if they are available anyway. You don't want a competitor buying the TLD that you forgot to purchase and creating unnecessary competition.

In fact, if you're willing to put the time into it - you could even split test your ideas a little with two separate websites, one on the .co.uk and one on the .com domain.

As for your keywords question, that's a fairly reasonable number of searches for a localised keyword. I don't see a problem with building a page around it, I wouldn't dedicate my whole site to it though. I like to create a page for each keyword when creating a lead generation website. That's just me though!

    Best of luck

If the domain is new, I'd definitely go for the .co.uk version. Although I use to consider to buy an aged .com

Com or co.uk doens't matter much when it comes to SEO, including backlinking.

But it can have an influence at the UK customers coming to the site, yes. It will give more trust to the UK customers if it's an co.uk domain.
