new google search results - 7box removed

Any thoughts on the "new" Google & how it will effect those of us working on local search?

I'm hoping to look at it more closely thisafternoon!

Crazy how they place the new map right over the adsense ads in the right hand column as you scroll down the page. Those advertising on adsense are going to be pissed off!

It will be interesting to follow.

I think it will help SEO's to target a local area for their "local area" customers.

      Hey Jacer

We love the new changes and have already talked to some of our customers about them.

They are still in the same positions as they were a few days ago but now they are in 99% of cases the first of the perceived "organic" searches.

Plus the box now follows you down the page which adds value to the customers as so does the A the B and the C etc.

      It's cool.

      Regards

I just saw this change yesterday when I was looking at a ranking for a local site we did. I'm a bit surprised Google put the map above adwords in the right column. You'd think this would reduce the number of clicks on the paid ads.

These changes further cement the importance of local search and with helping clients become present and visible there.

I can actually see this helping us offliners...

I plan to market to my new potential clients that now ranking high on maps also ranks you in terms of SEO for your site...example: when you are the A spot for maps, you most likely obtain one of the 1-3 top spots for your site (normally I would see options to rank a client high on maps as well as rank their site higher) but now I will increase my maps price as it's kind of a two-for one and stress the importance of having a site for clients that dont have a site as well as stress redesigns, ect.

i hope that made sense...kinda difficult to explain without being "too technical"

    Take-aways for Small Business

    1. If your business doesn’t have a website, you’ll miss out on local search now! (Get a WordPress Website here)
    2. Web presence is more important now too – look at the clustered results on the format. Searchers may not click on your website, they may click on one of the other links
    3. AdWords will get more competitive for local businesses
    4. Online reviews and Citations are more important than ever now

      Hi Zach

Agree with you especially with point 4.

That's where we offliners doing Google Places will really "earn" our money.

Reviews and Citations will be the bane of most small businesses - Enter the offline problem solver.

Don't you just love it when the market opens UP for you and makes it harder for the customers to say NO....

Talk about being screwed - and w/o a kiss! Several years ago, I remade my website for my brick and mortar business. I have always been on page 1 and 2 since. Now, I am not even in the top 10 pages. The "organic" searches are full of directory type websites whereas before, there were actual local listings.

I don't see how this mess G made helps people find local businesses. It was better before.

      Hi Alpha

It's not just about the website anymore. Make sure you optimize your Google Places listing so that it has an alternate reference point for you.

I've just checked this out - quite interesting to see how it develops.

But one thing is for sure - being in the listed Google Places is now absolutely essential for local search.

Fantastic opportunity for offline marketers who know what they are doing - you can now quickly get your clients top rankings for local search terms

It creates a whole lot of new opportunities for those in the offline niche. You just have to position yourself right.

I think it will have an impact on Adwords but I see in the past few days that the top 3 sponsored ads now appear at the top of the page for most searches. I think it will push up the price as people compete for the top 3 positions. Adwords is still Google's money machine and as we all know, they are obsessed with analytics, so I am sure they find a balance over the next few months between maps, local seo and adwords.

I see this as a huge opportunity to approach clients that don't feature on the first page, get them exposure with top 3 adwords (because they are late in the game) while we work on the rest their Online Marketing Campaign.

I created a big Online Marketing mind map that I take them through to show them all the aspects of online marketing and prioritizing their next steps based on budget and time. It helps if you chunk the information for them and the changes to Google Places opens the opportunity for conversations with them. You now have a reason to contact them

I think these changes have been great They are even more visible now.

It seems as though my seo work has only helped the local listings. I had quite a few clients gain ground. I'm happy and more importantly their happy.

Now we'll just see if they stay that way!

It doesn't affect my sites, they're still no 1 or 2 in google. One of them is only a squeeze page. If you know how you can rank well, you will stay on top. Let me clarify something: it is not about how many backlinks you have. Put in content and use your keywords.
Putting in location can work for or against you - it depends on what you want. For local businesses definitelly use them. Otherwise I wouldn't bother as I target the whole world.

I'm in Ireland so I ran some keyword phrases for the USA and as you can see from the screenshot below, there are 1,2,3 and 7 box map listings still appearing.

Some phrases that are triggering map listings for me:

      Dana Hotel Chicago
      Romantic Hotel Chicago
      Luxury Hotel Chicago

7 boxes are alive and well

      • I just blogged and showed a bunch of screenshots for some of the main variations of layouts that are out there right now. There still are 7 packs and 3 packs and 1 boxes and all kinds of variations out there.

And each layout has a different algo too which keeps things interesting! I alluded a little to the new localMerga algo, but of course didn't come right out and explain it. Wanted to share some words from the bottom of my blog post though, for those of you offering local SEO and offline marketing.

"There is a BIG window of opportunity here for those that understand what the change means. Everyone that’s ranking on top right now in the new localMerge format, just got lucky and happened to do several things right, but most don’t understand how they got there. Therefore they don’t know how to move up or how to STAY on top.

On the FLIP side there are a bunch of companies that HAD high organic rankings and a Place page but they aren’t LISTED AT ALL in the new merge format now. These companies also have no clue why! Many of those organic rankings are now pushed back to page 2 because the new merged listings take so much room and the directories and Yellow page results are also taking up space.

Just like for a long time hardly anyone could figure out the old Google local algo, and even prior to 10/27 very few did. Now with this change there is a big opportunity for those that figure out how to rank on top in the new localMerge algo. It takes a lot more than just having a Place page to be on top. And it takes a lot more than just having good organic SEO to be on top. It takes a special hybrid combo of BOTH now to rank well.

But EVEN if you have a highly optimized Place page AND a well optimized site you still may not get to page one, unless you work with someone that knows all the ‘hooks’ to make it all work!

I’m thinking about changing my title from Google Places Optimization Specialist
to Google Local INTEGRATION Specialist." :p

I agree with the points of local search ranking factors being extremely dominant and Very important in all ranking needs. Rank your clients for Google Places AND rank them for SEO with Google, Yahoo! and Bing.
