Local Directories: GeoPlaces theme or DirectoryPress?

Guys, looking for suggestions. For a local directory, taking into consideration things like accepting payments, ease of use, submitting listings, professionalism, style, functionality, etc., should I go with Templatic's GeoPlaces or DirectoryPress (Wordpress themes)? If anyone has had any past experience with either of them, that'd be awesome. Thanks.

Geo places is good for travel directory and I recommend directory press for business/web directory. Both are good,I think
It is also noted that directory press has better customer service than geo places

    Thanks

Hey John... I think if you were to use wordpress on this then you should go ahead with directory press. I prefer using Joomla for directory sites, and most other sites for that matter but when I have used wordpress directorypress is a nice one for what you're wanting to do. Of course, depending on the level you want to take this, you may want to end up using Joomla or Drupal if it will be a pretty large site.

I really like GeoPlaces and I'm considering it, but in trying to get some questions answered, I'm not getting much help from the staff at Templatic.

I think that pretty much sums it up... if they can't provide good support pre-buy, I can't imagine the support post-buy will be any better.

What did you end up choosing John?

I have DirectoryPress installed on a couple of sites. If I'm honest, I find it a little 'clunky' if you really want to customise the look and feel of it. Having said that, that might be down to my own level of expertise. They have a great forum where you can get answers to a lot of questions.

There is a new version just been released which has some great features (new sliders, sidebar widgets etc).

In terms of payment options it has plenty, and in terms of listing management it's great. Might be better for using on a local niche site as opposed to a national site, as the deeper you go with URLs (eg /category/postname) can cause a little layout issue.

Holy old thread lol - how did this get dug up?

iAmNameLess - is there a particular Joomla theme you use for directories? I usually stick with Wordpress and I actually have the Directory Press theme but I feel like it maybe requires a little too much tweaking. Plus I'm interested in checking out a Joomla theme and see if it's something I might want to use.

I did a search for GeoPlaces and this was the top thread in the results. So I wrongly assumed that this was a recent thread. I didn't check the date of the original post!

Not that big of a deal for those of us that are trying to find relevant information. Just because it is an older thread does not mean that it is of no value or there is nothing left to contribute to it.

Heck some of the oldest books on copywriting that I have are better than the newest books that are out there.

Information is not like a computer, it does not all of the sudden become obsolete just because it is a year or two old.

    Hey,

I own both and have tested each quite a lot. I find DirectoryPress to be super heavy and 'clunky' as was mentioned already. I far prefer GeoPlaces theme, even if the support isn't great. I've not had to reach out to them yet, but you could go on Fiverr and get all the help you probably need (and then some) for $5.

DirectoryPress seems difficult to remove if you're a non-techy should you decide to change themes too. It moves or creates an upload folder or two so you have to enter cPanel and remove them manually. It wouldn't delete using FTP for me for some reason...

GeoPlaces is the way to go! Let me know any other questions if I can help.

    Good luck!
    Ryan

Just a heads up because I was shopping around and liked geoplaces. Apparently it has some big security issues. I guess you can delete posts and pages via url string without even being logged in. This was mentioned in a wso launched recently. RSL Directory or something like that.

I use GeoPlaces for the past year and I've never regretted it. It's probably my favorite theme I ever used out dozens.

WooThemes has one that looks pretty nice. Classic Woo though...very simple. GeoPlaces is looking the best to me.
