Keywords?

OK, so I guess I should know better. But, I don't!

Is there a minimum-maximum number of KEYWORDS that should be used in the <meta KEYWORDS...> section of the web page?

I just looked at a local Realtor's page, and it looks something like this:

Blue bar (description that shows at top) HOME

KEYWORDS: 50+ pretty vague attempts at keywords. May be more, but I got lost trying to count 'em all. :<(

DESCRIPTION: There is none.

And, that's just for starters!

  • Pete,

The keyword meta is ignored by Google. Good practice is one to two keywords for those search engines that may still place value on them.

I would not be surprised if the Big G might devalue a page for stuffing keywords in the meta, though I have no proof of that.

You can learn more here: Google doesn’t use the keywords meta tag in web search

  • I don't personally place too much importance into the keywords tags, though I still use them. Boy is the title tag important though

I'll put a few keywords in, though I have been lazy in a few cases and had repeats throughout pages. I'd stay away from "stuffing" though, there's really no reason for it and like mentioned above, you never know if it could get you in trouble.

  • Thanks, folks.

I thought as much, but not being the "pro" at this that most of you are, didn't know for sure.

On top of that, this "designer" did everything in tables, which (according to nibbler any way,) is pretty much the sign of a Junk site.

  • The Meta keyword has no limit. You can give a number of Meta tags you think enough to define your entire business. Google considers the Meta tags within its source code.

    • Thank you for your comments, but looks like you need to read the article from Google a couple of posts above where they say that Meta tags DO NOT figure into your placement or ranking.

  • Because search engines are looking for relevancy, having a plethora of keywords does you no good. Being very targeted and selective will work best for both parties. Chose no more than 8 keywords for each page, and don't forget to use different keywords.

    • Hi Pete!
No,there is not a limit. My advice is being targeted and use also competitive keywords. However keyword meta tags are not extremely important because some search engines are more interested with site content.
  • Thanks for all of your input folks. I made a few suggestions to my client, he made the changes, and he's already seeing some results as far as Google placement.

That makes him happy, and ME some money.

  • thank you for asking about meta tags Pete I also have the same question to you about meta tags and now is fulfilled
  • Well everyone says they are not important even google but if you add them and then do a search quite often they turn up.

The most important however are the title and description and following that are tags on your posts. This is just from long time experience and watching statistics.

  • Quentin,

You are SO right. When you clicked up his website, first thing you saw at the top was "Home". I didn't have to beat him too hard to get that changed, and that alone made a big difference.

  • While Google does not actively consider them other search engines do. And, while not all that important why not do a quality job. I would dispute the comment that there is no limit. SEO is about focus, how is 10+ (and I've seen more than 50) focusing? An SEO expert advised me to use 5 to 7 per page. Also ensure you use your geographic keywords as well. So instead of locksmith, use seattle locksmith. They may not help a lot, but every little bit counts in this game!

    • We can use more keywords in content of the website. Google is well known for skatchy data. We can place primary keywords in the beginning of title tag. The quality of keywords is more important than the quantity of keywords. To get the high rank in search engine, we have to do article submission, forum posting, social bookmarking ,blog commenting, etc.
  • There is no rule for number of keywords. Normally we give 8 to 10 keywords in the meta tag. But what to keep in mind is to place the keywords in the meta tag section in decreasing priorities means maximum priority keyword must be placed at first.
