Should I Buy a New Domain Name?

Hi warriors,

I have a friend, running an offline company, who asked me to help with his site about bringing more SE traffic. The site(domain) is 2 years old and it was left to its fate once built. I mean no search engine traffic up to now. The design, content are terrible and zero backlinks. The domain name consists of his company name, and does not include any target keywords.

So, what I cannot decide here is which one would be better?

1. Leave the domain as it is, SEO optimize the content and design of the site and start building backlinks.

2. Register a new domain which contains one of the target keywords(like companynamekeyword.com) and create the site from scratch and start building backlinks.

I wouldn't ask this if the domain was a lot newer.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

I'd buy the new domain name. Forward the old one to the new one just in case it's out there anywhere, or they don't want to replace business cards and such.

If it were me I'd try and keep the domain and work on it. It's an aged domain so it should gain some respect from google etc. However if you get a great domain name and do some really good SEO on it you could also make it work. However it could be a while before you're consistently on first page of google for a keyword with such a new domain name. Especially if there is a lot of competition.

      I would do both.

Get the old site going and get the new domains and take two spots on Google instead of one.

Perhaps I missed it, but what is the domain name? I do not want this to come across in the wrong way, but my company works on these types of issues, plus more, on a regular basis. We have workers in Canada and the USA. We would be happy to work with your friend resolve these issues. I am honesty certain that he or she will be very pleased with the results. No matter what, I wish your friend the best when it comes to resolving these issues.

When is the domain name set to expire? Is it set to automatically renew?

If he's running an offline company that is local, I would get him ranked in Google place. Get the new domain and forward the old one...

If a keyword rich domain name is available, I would do that no matter what. You could always redirect the old one like some other people have mentioned.

I understand your frustration, but free markets always lead to monopoly. Read your Karl Marx.
