How do you setup tracking for your clients?

Wanted to get your 2 cents from fellow offliners.
Need real time, reliable conversion tracking from multiple sources.

Preferably low cost/free that will take care of:

PPC tracking (Google Adwords, Tracking 202, HippoJaw - I have used)
SEO tracking (lot of the ones that do PPC tracking do NOT do serp tracking well)
Call tracking: most clients don't need this but one potential client needs as they get multiple calls around the same time.

Would appreciate any input you have.

This is a good question. I use Google Analytics for tracking sales, conversions.

    That's it

Every client needs call tracking. It's just that simple. Its not for them, it's for you. How do you justify all the work you do that is generated from phone calls? Call Tracking. And even then, your work is going to have a general "brand lift" so you still don't get all the credit that is due to you.

Google Analytics will be fine for what you need for the first 2. Marchex - A Call Advertising and Small Business Marketing Company is for call tracking.

      Thanks for the recommendation.
I tell my clients to have a separate phone line. From that separate phone line we look at logs to see how many calls generated from marketing efforts. This is okay for them as all they care about is they are getting calls and efforts are working.

However disadvantage is cannot track which keyword the call came from - which is were you recommendation comes in. Have you personally used them and how much is their cost/fee?

I agree with traffictips now: google analytics - just I would set up a separate account for each client with a separate e-mail address.

Yea, I've tried the "just have a separate phone line" before. Problem is that 9 times out of 10 it isn't separate and then the tracking of all deals gets convoluted. Plus, as I said above, all marketing is "brand lifting" as well and if they're getting more brand queries or interests, they'll start doing brand searches in Google and you don't get credit for that - so it's important that you just control all the phone numbers so that you can show validity in all the work you do, not just "pieces". Because at the end of the day, if they have to stop various forms of marketing, you always want to justify your work to them. The last thing you want them to do is stop spending with you, so always make sure to have my systems in place to show justification of there spending with me and my services.

Yes, I use them currently. To get started its $15 for a number and then you pay per min. I just love the fact I can record phone calls for all clients. Makes it easy and transparent of all the work/leads we provide for them.

Justification is everything. The good thing about recording the call is that if the client is unsatisfied you can show them where their team is dropping the ball... we used this before and it came to light that the sales team sucked and that was that.

I use Google Analytics as well and it sends my customers a report every month.

Of course if your not producing good traffic for them this may not be a good idea.

Google analytics is great as many others have said. Also, Market Samurai does a nice job of tracking ranking across the search engines. I always set this up right when I start with a client and throw as many relevant keywords in there as possible

I hate to get old school and non technical here... but what about a simple Promo Code.

Each of your various marketing streams has a different "Promo Code" attached and it is up to the receptionist, sales rep, or biz owner to keep track of the incoming promo codes. This is the way it has been done for centuries. And I know it works because I still use it.

Simple as that... Call me.. and mention promo code "WARRIOR" for a special pricing.

    Promo Code/coupons work great,
Also try line2 for calls, $10 a month for toll free/local number unlimited mins. They have a web interface so you can view calls etc.

    Agreed RedCell...

But interrupts branding in your marketing efforts. I don't know if any of my clients or yours for that matter... are willing to give up not having their number memorized....

Amir you do make a good point, for most of my clients I only use that number for anything that is based online. Just so I can track the calls and justify myself. Now some clients are comfortable with this so we go back to using online only promotions, coupons, etc. That is another option and if they don't use either then we have issues because I can't prove to them that I do work and it's not luck

  • Good info here. I just keep it really simple for myself. I setup Google Analytics for each customer. I give each a local number from Google. I then forward that number to their phone number at their store.

See, this is how I have it working. I create a video or mailing for them, rank it high in google or on their fanpage (i built that too) , then when the customer calls that local number it rings to their phone, (customer doesnt know the difference). Then it is recorded and in the 'history' of the Voice Analytics page. So I can send them a printout that shows

    Time
    Who
    Day
    Caller Id

This is easy and works well. It will show how many people actually use my trackable 'new' number to call my clients business, because the lead seen the video I created or mini site, etc.
