It seems every day you see huge success stories from marketers on here showing off how they made "x,xxx" from one client or how they got a brand new 4-figure client in a few minutes.

Very rarely, however, do you see claims from marketers on how they actually INCREASED their client's revenue by any percentage. And let's face it... if we're not making our clients money, were useless. We could create the most badass site in the world, filled with top-notch copywriting and an awesome sales funnel, we could get them listed #1 for every keyword within their niche, we could create a rabid social media presence... but if it's not bringing in MORE revenue than what we're charging, we're redundant.

So here's my question... if you're working in a small town with low search volumes across the boards, how can you justify your prices, even if they're small? How can you be sure that your marketing MAKES your clients money?

I'm just interested in sparking a discussion that is, for once, more about providing value for the business owner than sucking as much money from them as possible.

This is essentially what I am going to be attempting to provide these small businesses in my area. They either have woefully inadequate websites or no website at all, and when they do have a nice website, they're not getting the attention from the correct search terms...so yeah, there's a LOT I can offer them, and if I do that, the money will follow.

    It always has.

      Jesse.....

      Great question......

If the customer gets 10 calls a month from your website/marketing initiatives and closes 2 per month....

      If your new client was an orthodontist...kid needs braces.....cha ching....$6k each.....Total Revenue=$12k

What if that mom/family has 5 upandcoming teens.....referrals....etc...

      My advice: offer options.....

      I'm sure you'll receive many ideas....good luck

Lisa, I am excited to see your post. I am just starting to contact local businesses that don't have a website and arranging on a case by case basis a plan for me getting paid to build them a website, do their search engine maps listing, and also provide hosting.

This week I got my first client and I have a raccoon to thank for that. I needed the raccoon removed from the chimney and the only contractor who had time to come take a look did not have a website. Long story short - the raccoon is gone, my chimney has a new cap, he has a website, and I have some residual income (hosting and an inexpensive maintenance plan which pays me to do website backups and restores if he gets hacked.) I am not doing SEO or SEM - just the website, hosting and backups.

I did do keyword research for him, helped him find a domain name that matched the beatable term with the highest searches per month...I really applied my skills. He is happy with his site. It is a simple wordpress site that took only twenty minutes to create. Today I got a check for two years prepaid hosting and maintenance - that is the deal I created. Free website when you prepay for two years of hosting and maintenance.

Another detail - I had him create his own account at godaddy and had him buy his own domain and had him call godaddy to change the nameservers to my host. I did it that way so if in the future he wants to host somewhere else, I can just send him the site and he can change the nameservers himself since he owns the domain.

My house is old and needs a lot of work. I am going to try to find local contractors without websites to do as much of the work as I can, and hope that some of them will want a simple website. Now that I have my first client, I can show his site as an example.

      Good luck to you!

    Hi Jesse

The first part of the comments are being actively talked about in another thread here in the offline sector.

    Some good some bad...LOL

    Anyway, onto the second part.

    Small towns.

In our view they are a different "kettle of fish". We target them on doing a website and hosting, then charge an on-call maintenance fee (small monthly fee) should they want to change, add or remove anything or if the site has any hic-hups.

Plus we do a small amount of backlinks.

That's pretty much all we do.

But they seem to love it.

    Regards

    Bronwyn and Keith
PS. The benefit of small towns is that they "tell everybody" who did the website - so make it good first time or you probably just lost the whole town.
