Doing some nightly reading and came across this in the times:

Google, Groupon: Google in talks to buy Groupon deals site - latimes.com

I will be very interested to see how this plays out in the long run, and what affect it will have within the "local search" realm.. What do ya'll think? I could see this being incorporated with their TAGS and BOOST stuff eventually.....

  • Looks to me they're trying to wash some money.

Seems quite a bit stupid to buy a company for 5.2 billion when it's valued at 1.5b.
  • I had heard google was looking to buy it a while back, but I had no idea that it was worth that much money. It's crazy to think it would be their biggest purchace the've made so far.

    • It's not worth that much money, which is why it is a big ol':confused::confused:
  • I think they are just securing their place in the future of offline/online "couponing". It is rapidly growing, and it is one area Google does not have covered. I guess they can afford to take a "risk" in this sense....

  • yes , NEWS says deal has been finalized. After beaten by Facebook on social media networking front ,google will not take any chance on competition directly or in directly. They are smart people , they know how to recover the huge acquisition cost over a period of time.

  • Google definitely wants to be a major player in the online discount/coupon arena. While it might seen foolish for them to pay so much for it, they are bound to get a good ROI out of it. After all, they bought the largest player, so they have essentially bought out the competition.
