Selling to scrap yards recykling plants etc.

Hey all.

I'm looking for a bit of advice from the salesmen among you in here.

Currently I'm in the process of creating a product that will help businesses here in Denmark handle the logging of various information on government systems a lot more easily than their current options allows.

In a nutshell it is scrapyards, transporters, recykling plants etc. who has to log the movement of the various materials and trash they handle on a daily basis.

Currently the system they use allows for a manual entering of all data one by one. for a comany that deals with hundreds of customers and logs every day this is quite a chore to do manually.

We plan on integrating an automatic solution into our existing software for these customers enabling them to log all data without any labor intensive data entry etc.

Now for my question.
how should I approach my potential customers? Me going in there with a fancy suit and a lot of IM speak somehow doesn't seem to be the best idea when I go in to deal with customers who are used to attacking computer problems with a hammer.

Any good advice?

    Know your target demographic.

    Do they wear suits?

My suggesstion is to become "one of the them". Speak like they speak, dress like they dress, and you will build instant and long lasting rapport. Even if they don't like your product. They may just do business with you based on "Liking" you.

    Why ?

Because you are one of them.

Don't get me wrong... don't be fake...

Be yourself. But be one of them. If that makes any sense to you at all.

The best thing for you to do in my experience... get inside thier head.

What do they value? What are they like? What do they drive?

Things that most people don't even think about. Because they are rushing in with thier "golden idea" that they might not want because it doesn't fit thier value system.

    With that...

Focus on Features and Benefits that they will recieve from your product and you can't lose.

If you go in talking all technical. They will not understand you. And they will not spend money on something they do not understand.

    Peace of mind.
    Increased productivity
    bottom line results
    decrease in labor cost

these are things they understand. Hammer or no hammer.

    Good info from Amir

This would be considered a niche, so I would recommend just getting to know what Amir said, how they talk (Pick up on lingo, etc), how they dress, where they socialize in and etc.

    Absolutely....

Thanks for bringing up the socialize part RedCell....

It may be in your best interest to go where they go....
If there is a bar, coffee shop, Diner, whatever..... go there. If it's a bar... Don't get drunk. You increase the odds of making an ass of yourself. I speak from experience on that one.

Anyway...chances are. You may be able to catch one of the Big Whigs at the bar. You strike up a casual conversation as friend. Get to know him. BUT DON"T SELL HIM. Just get him to like you, without trying too hard. The don't try too hard is very important there. You can just be like... "whatever". If you can't socialize with them. Yout goal is to get them to like you.... That's it. Nothing else.

Then when you get the meeting... they already know you and like you.

If you can't get the meeting for some reason. You can pitch them at the bar. I can't tell you how many deals I have made sitting at a bar in a casual environment drinking club soda while they give me all thier goodies because they got sloshed.

    It works... it really does.

    Whatever you do...

    Just do it.

I agree while I cant go to a bar since I'm only 19. I have gone to corporate parties, events, weddings (No joke) and other functions where it was casual conversation that turned into appointments, but since we had met in a social setting it was a closed deal already.
