If you're looking to find telemarketers, you can find them in various places:

-Forums that cater to telemarketers, small business people, insurance agents, etc.
    -Craigslist
    -Local newspaper
    -LinkedIn
    -Twitter job posting services
    -College bulletin boards
    -Local and state job boards
-Paid job sites like Monster (pricey, but it works)

I have a free report about recruiting telemarketers on my blog if you're interested. It's called "Get more leads than you can handle".

It's going to depend on the telemarketer. Someone with experience calling B2B is going to do better than someone without experience. Is it possible that you could get someone that stinks on the phone... Yes. But you'll know really quickly, and then you can fire them and move on.

It's just like any position that any company fills. You're looking for the best candidate, but it doesn't always work out.

When it comes to recruiting telemarketers though, if you look for someone that's setup to do telemarketing from home and has been setting appointments/generating B2B leads for a year or two (or more) successfully, you should be ok if your offer's good.

That's the other thing to look at... Sometimes it's not the telemarketer that stinks... it's the offer. I'm not saying your offer stinks by any means; I'm just trying to point out some things to consider for anyone reading this post.

This is true... That is why I make everyone a partner....

I think it was JC Penny that made everyone in his store a manager.... So I make everyone a partner. I show them exactly what it costs to do what. And... offer them 50% commission.

Call it... Affiliate Marketing ON CRACK... Call it Nancy... I don't care what you call it...
This is what has been working for me. I have them call and get website sales. The best way to sell SEO is to offer a website first. IMHO, and experience.

So once I have established client relations. I move on to other products becuase the website sales was a LOSS LEADER. Priced just enough to cover cost, make the TM a few bucks... and set me up with a HOT lead for various other products.....

    Why?

Because I am their web guy.

There is more than one way to do what you want to do. And it depends on your specific model.

My whole life has been is sales of one sort or another. So I am very comfortable hiring straight commission or "performance based". If you have no experience hiring people, firing, and managing people. You may want to go the commission only route.

The reason I say this is because my experiences in keeping people too long because I know they had a family. Or I know they just might get it tomorrow. But tomorrow never comes. So I am wasting money on paying these people that are not performing because deep down. I just don't have the heart to tell them to kick rocks.

I never would have thought this would happen to me. Why? Because I haven't always been a saint. I have done some bad things with some bad people in my day. So... I fancied myself a tough guy. When it came down to it though.... I just don't feel right about cutting people that I know need the money. Call me a softy. Call me what you want. I am just sharing my experience.

When hiring performance based... or straight commission. I have found that if they don't perform... they will walk away. You don't have to fire them. Because they will go get an hourly job somewhere else, where the owner will want to fire them but has a soft spot in his heart like I do.

    Another aspect of this is...

You get more performance minded and higher quality workers when they are working straight commission. They know... if I don't do this... I don't eat.

The hourly guy doesn't really give a crap. He will do his best to meet your quota. But will not push any further. One way around that... is set your quota and bonus structure so high that it takes a rockstar to get it.

But then you have bad moral from the ones that can't. You really don't want negative thoughts running around in your organization. This is just plain bad for business. The low guy on the totem pole who is not making it.... will bring everyone else down with his negative comments and plant seeds you really don't want growing in a productive environment.

As far as getting commissioned reps that will do it and perform. You have to hire 10 to get 2. Then rotate. Hire ten get two.

Eventually you will have 5 or 6 people working on your staff that are solid performers. It just takes time. I know most of us want to be wealthy overnight. But that is just not the case when it comes to hiring and firing.

This really is a double edged sword, but well worth doing. Yet, there really is no one blanket answer to give. It is really a case by case scenario.

Very informative post Louie. Where do you find most of your people? Craigslist? Odesk? Sales Gravy? Careerbuilder?

The .ph gives me the impression they are in the Phillipines. I have had negative experiences with the Phillipine contractors I have hired through stuff like oDesk.

The inflection in their voice. Their accent. No bueno.

The purpose of the call is to not only get the deal over the phone... Purpose one.

Set an appointment so we can get a deal. Purpose two.

But to build trust in the brand and establish rapport.

Phillipino contractors are just not capable of that.

        @Rolltide.

I hire a lot of friends of friends. I network. People that know me. People that I know. That way there is more of an accountablity on both sides.

They know they are going to get paid. I know they will work because their ego may get affected if our mutual friends found out what a duche they are.

I have used craigslist with limited success.

I have also placed print newspaper ads in smaller towns. Really cheap by the way. And they don't have as many opportunities for work. So they call... we interview over the phone. If we beleive it will be a mutually beneficial deal. We move forward.

        No big deal.

You might be pleasantly surprised using Adwords to find a salesperson.

Just create your add and target it with a very specific qualification.
