Letters From Santa [Out of the Box Offline Marketing]

Hey Everyone,
My name is Dr. Ben Adkins and let me start out by saying "Thank You!".
This forum has helped me build my brick and mortar business as well as my online business and I honestly don't know what I would do without it.

I recently began writing a series of WSOs about unique Offline Marketing techniques that my team has employed and I am extremely excited about our first WSO in the series titled "[The GOSSIP Technique]" (I won't link from here... because that's lame!). It's been selling like crazy and the testimonials have been really good. I feel very blessed his Holiday!

I wanted to write a quick "thank you note" here and also offer a cool little Freebie for the Forum.

My team and I live in a town of about 17,000 and we are always looking for fun ways to blend Online Marketing with our Offline Stuff. During the Christmas Season we have a favorite Venture Called "Letters From Santa".

The Idea goes Like This:

  1. We set up a small landing page that has a simple sales letter that offers A "Letter from Santa" for your Child. (The Page has an explanation of the Product, A short spill that talks about how we donate 50% of the profits to a local charity, and a "Buy it Now Button".)
  2. When the person clicks the buy it now button they pay around $10 for each letter from Santa. There is a form where they can input their child's name, what they want for Christmas, and the address the letter needs to go to.
  3. As soon as they pay, we get an email letting us know that we need to put a letter together and the person who purchases the letter/s gets an email thanking them for their purchase and the donation to their local charity.
  4. Their Child Gets a Really Cool "Letter From Santa" (Christmas Card written "from Santa" in "Santa-ish" handwriting.

So.... Why in the World Would Someone Pay $10 for a Letter From Santa for their kid?!?

The Answer.... The Charity
(It is Christmas you know!)

Make sure to give people an idea of how much money you are trying to raise for the charity with the promotion and all of a sudden the price is justified to people.

Here's the fun part....

  • Most Charities have a group on hand that can help actually put the letters together and mail them out. (If they don't...you can usually find another group that will volunteer their time to put the pieces together.
  • Alot of Charities/Nonprofits have a reduced postage rate if you meet certain criteria (Nonprofit Postage Rates - How to Apply For Nonprofit Postage Rates - Learn How to Get Nonprofit Postage Rates for more)
  • You organize and put the idea in and you get the satisfaction of a small profit and doing something really nice for a local charity this Christmas.
Why will they be ok with you taking a cut every year?

The Marketing.... (and Supplies)
You will be the one putting together the facebook page and gathering community support (you're also the organizer the first time you do this with this organization but you'll be amazed how much easier this fundraiser gets the second time around).

Closing Notes:
This isn't going to be anything that makes you alot of money.... but you will come out ahead monetarily (even after you purchase the cards for the letters from Santa and help cover postage....especially if you get your supplies in the right place and your charity/nonprofit qualifies for discounted postage) and in the "good will" department.

The idea is to do something good this holiday.

If you need to see a selfish side to this....
It makes you look pretty good in your community when they see you going to bat for a local charity. If you have any sort of offline business... this kind of thing is huge.

Tweaks and Corrections:
I'm sure there are better ways to do this... Every time we do something like this we learn how to do it better. The point is to "Be Unique and Think Outside the Box". There is a ton of money and good will to be gained...and you might just end up helping someone in the Process

Merry Christmas and I hope you have an Amazing 2011.
Thanks again for everything you've given me in 2010.

Dr. Ben Adkins

this letter thingy looks pretty cool ...

Sadly my 13 yr old and 17 yr old are likely getting a lump of coal and lump on the head if they keep it up!!!

    Glad you guys like it!

CrhisD and 4moreref: Sounds like I just found another use for Animoto and my Flip cam
Pretty sure we can charge more for video and the delivery is much easier (email).

This kind of brainstorming is the reason th WF rocks

I think that this is a wonderful idea that is a win-win for all parties involved. Not only are you doing a great thing that will be immensely appreciated by the charity (especially since many of them have absolutely no clue how to use social media effectively to market themselves), you'll also get a little bit out of it monetarily, and the emotional satisfaction derived from doing something like this would be priceless!

    Yep.

I paid $4 to get a phone call from Santa
and my wife got a video from Santa also

and in Australia each kid that sends a letter to Santa, the post office sends a reply.

I'm one of those guys that thought.... "Who would buy that?!?"
We started on a whim and it was a hit.

Amazing what we'll do for our kids isn't it
I'm all for it if we get the chance to help out those less fortunate.
    Win-win for sure.

    Thanks for the feedback everyone!
