    Trial and error.

A lot of trial and error.

I just started experimenting with fiverr.com It is a good place to get some cheap help for a trial run for some things. I am paying 5 dollars right now on that site for some real simple research.

Other than that.... try some of the outsourcing sites like script-lance and do small tests with several people till you find a good person.
Like the previous person mentioned... it will be trial an error unless you know someone.

If you place good service ahead of making money... opportunities to make money will present themselves.

100 pounds may or may not be fair. It depends on what you're selling, how long it takes to sell it, how difficult it is to sell, how many of them they can sell, etc.

I'm also interested to see the answers here, though. I've got a new project that I'm going to have a couple guys start calling on next week. I have the feeling, though, that I may need to find more professional help than what I've got. I'm not sure where to find it. Anyone had success with elance for callers?

For commission only sales reps, I tend to use Craigslist or Monster. About 10% of the ones I hire actually make sales and stick around. The rest give up on their first attempts.

The amount of money in commission depends largely on the total $ of your initial sale, if you are giving them any part of your residual business with clients they bring in AND whether you are supplying leads or whether they are doing their own leader generation.

In addition to independent sales reps, I have had a great deal of success with strategic relationships/joint ventures with other businesses -mostly commercial printers, accountants, traditional ad agencies and restaurant suppliers (beverage suppliers, etc...)

    Hope this helps.

    All the best,
    Thom

I find it interesting how the people you find offline (or in the JOB market like Monster) are more dedicated to JV's and things personally... they arent as desensitized to "opportunity" and tend to take it more seriously.

Great observation there. People need to realize that when they're hiring commission-only sales reps, the drop-out/failure rate is going to be very high, and they have to be constantly hiring new ones just to replenish the failed ones and keep their marketing efforts on an even keel.

There's very little risk to the person being hired if they're being paid on a commission-only basis, and therefore many don't feel any obligation to follow through, especially when they do this for a few days and don't see any fast results. You're going to get a lot of people who jump ship quickly, and many will try to ask you several very familiar questions which are impossible for anyone to answer -

1- "How long will it usually take before I get my first sale?"

2- "Out of 100 people I contact/call, how many sales will I get?"

3- "How many hours do I have to work daily to see results with this?"

This all comes from the j.o.b. mentality that many people are conditioned with, and there'll only be a few people you hire who can truly see the bigger picture that arises from their activities and efforts.

I will give you another side of this, from a real perspective, I have over many years worked as a commission only rep for varying companies / or a combination retainer commission, this was on purpose more so that a good rep can and does quite often write his own cheque book and they can earn very big money when they know how to spin the wheel of fortune.

They never worry about looking for work nor where the next $ comes from and they understand there is no cushion to fall back on, but the good ones do not want the cushion for their backside to land on. They are go getters who work on a mission are focused and do not have the time to sit down, they walk the walk and do not sit around talking the talk.

But in referral to you statement as to many not sticking around, I will relate it another way and that is people operating at this level, do and will pick who and what they promote and it is not the other way around. - they will pick you not you pick them

But over the years i have met so many wanker employers who would not shift a log if they pushed hard enough and it would also go with out saying many of the so called jocks who are playing pretend i am a manager or boss have little to no knowledge and 2 sparrow farts worth of any intel on how to generate sales.

Most of them as a result bleat out or put in place draconian sales targets and restrictions, married with piddy if not crap payment / rewards options for the reps.

It is these people and the ways that they come up with that they use in best interests to something they thought up over breakfast that causes the top sales people working on coms to just walk out the door, they simply do not need the crap and rubbish put together by that company.

The end result is bob the bumper boss, ends up spending a lifetime filtering through 2nd and 3rd grade sales people wondering why 10% stay and even those he has to hold their hand during the weekly circle jerk meetings that are nothing more than ego boosters to the ill informed appointed sales manger belting of his next big idea on how to generate sales.

Good reps don't need that crap, and as a guide from the other side this is some of what the top people would look for.

just give them a good product or service that is very high in quality and has very good value for money selling point (as customer if i asked whats in it for me, i would want to see rainbows and sparkles) ,

a good and functional back up support system to that product or service, I want to now if i am there selling the clients that i have a system behind me that can clear up any general in house problems, i do not want a back log of people bogging me down with small problems or having issues with a slack arse company who wont deal with issues, i need a state of synergy where all company dept work well and quietly, and crap here in this part tells me i am working in b grade and to move on.

a favorable and high paying reward for effort payment structure, minimal or less restricted back end that ties me up in red tape bull crap, i am not interested in yabbering all day over how cute the puppy is in the window, my job is to create conversions so let me go and do what it is you want done, wast your time with learners but not with me.

my favorite saying here (to myself) would be "when you can sell more than me i would be happy for you to sit down and tell me how it all works"

to have a good pleasant work environment that supports quietly the staff, and i am not talking about a party with streamers each week, but a quiet beer at the end of the month and thanks for your great work, we appreciate what your doing , goes a long way, so here i suppose do not treat these people as numbers because they choose to work with you, not the other way around, so if you start to treat people like a door mat and wipe your feet on them, they will go.

Not much really, so less i am the big boss stuff, a good product, a good value sell point, good back up and service, good payment and commission structure, and then keep it real and some good we appreciate you time (2 core ingredients when working with people, they need to feel like they are wanted / and they feel important and appreciated), where you can ask if there is anything else they may need to help them, if so they will let you know what they need to produce more sales.

get some of those basics into play and you will stop turning over b and c grade wanna bee's and attract good sales people that you wont turn over as often and every body is happy.

You can try craigslist, fiverr and zeerk.com.
Try them for an hour or so and see what they come up with.
You can find good sales reps on elance (if you are lucky) but the really good ones are expensive.

I am using Elance. I have one I am currently using and it's been a disaster. She talks with me more more than making calls. She runs a marketing business and sold me when I spoke with her 3 weeks ago.

I have a new guy starting on Monday on a trial week.

    $10/hr
    15 hrs/wk
    $50/sale

If he can't close any deals I'm only out $150, but he is confident he can close at least one.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Try Gumtree, more popular in the UK than craigslist.
