Employee Vs Independant contractor When Hiring Help

A lot of threads have talked about hiring Appointment setters etc. via craigslist . When you hire these people to represent your company and give them a script to follow but they work for them selves should you have a workers comp policy on them like a normal employee or can you just hire them as a Independant contractor?

What is the best way to do this?

What are your risks and liabilities if you hire them as a independant contractor?

Contract. Let them handle their own taxes etc.

You need to check with your state laws regarding independent contractors.

There are several things you need to take into account so that your relationship never moves across the line into the employer/employee relationship.

If that happens your liability for taxes, Workmen's compensation and withholding becomes a reality.

I've hired everyone as independent contractors so far and will probably continue doing it that way. It's much less to worry about. They take care of their own stuff (tax wise) and you take care of your own. Not only that, but you don't have to worry about benefits and all of that.

Of course, if you grow your business massively and are trying to accomplish something much bigger, it might be good to consider having employees. It all depends on what you are trying to accomplish.
