Offline Marketers...If you had to create sales for an offline business in 30 days or less...

Let's pretend this is a brand new business and he needs to get business in the door in 30 days or less. And to make things interesting, use only non-paid methods. How would you do it?

I'm hoping this thread can be beneficial to everyone. But just to jump-start the process...

1.) Add a message to their credit card receipt to get coupons at "www..."
2.) Add an email capture to their website.
3.) Have sales people collect email addresses at the cash register (for repeat business)
4.) Set up a Facebook page with coupons.
5.) Set up a Wordpress blog to get indexed fast.
6.) Get listed in Google local business.

Let your imagination run wild. There are no bad ideas.

Not sure what you're looking to get apart from a random bunch of hypotheticals....

Without saying what type of business or who their target customers are - there's no way to know what would be useful or not.

    Each niche is different.

It depends on the type of business. But if we're talking about some kind of retail operation, then I don't know how much value your stated suggestions would be.

The best way to get people in the door someplace is to have a deal that will get people acquainted with your place of business. And the best way to do that is by offering some kind of great offer. Ideally it's a win/win for you and the customer (you make money, they get a great deal). But if you have a good product, then you shouldn't be afraid to give something away to get more business down the line...or immediately.

You got some great advice here.
One caveat - find out what the average industry sales cycle is.
If is Business to Consumer than usually it is short but B 2 B has a longer sales cycle depending on the industry because higher amounts are involved.
For one of my B2B clients - it took them 8 months to get a solid lead from my services and I managed expectations before hand. When they got leads after 6 months - they struck gold worth 50x more for what I charge them so it was worthwhile investment for them.

Haha, probably because we read similar books and learn from similar marketing professionals!

@ David - They could also do a Joint-Venture with a non-competing company to access their database of buyers, and share a percentage of profits with them in order to get an endorsement from them to their list etc. (which of course requires a VERY special offer made especially to that list)

@sdentrepreneur: Love the Google video idea but how would it translate into immediate local sales for a retailer? Possibly in some metropolitan locations. And I could see it happening over time.

Is there an offline trick I'm not aware of using YouTube to drive immediate local sales?

Definitely make sure you've got your electronic base in order as you've said - with Facebook, Google Places, etc...

Then, Alliances, Alliances, Alliances - find strategic partners who they can cross coupon or cross promote. In the case of a retailer or other B2C service, have them connect with 10 or so others and become the ringleader on putting together a discount card (with each retailer/service provider's deal included in one sentence on the back). IF needed to be zero cost, each retailer could kick in $50 for production expenses, but I'd suggest eating the minimal cost of production or including a printer in on the promotion in exchange for their printing services on the project.

Each retailer could either give away the cards, sell them for $5 or $10 or give them away with a qualifying purchase amount. They would each then have a simple flyer at their registers that have the name and deal of each participating retailer right there.

Typically this takes 1 week to get everyone on board and the cards produced. Then, the following 3 weeks, they have the benefit of tapping into their partners existing client base - while giving their partners greater exposure as well through the other partners.

Another variation - that typically takes a couple weeks longer before the benefits kick in - is to contact local schools, charities, church youth groups, senior class advisors, etc... and let them know you've got these retailer discount cards that you would allow them to sell for fundraising purposes for $10 each - and they get to keep the entire $10.

It works amazingly well and in addition to generating immediate business, it also sets the new business owner up as a center of influence in their business community. They make friends with others who can help them amazingly fast because they are immediately adding value to the all the others.

I've used this with everything from dry cleaners, restaurants, shoe stores to air conditioning/refrigeration contractors, auto repair shops and orthodontists.

Plenty of other ways beyond this. But, to me, if you tell me you've got little time to generate an audience of buyers, I alway look first for the ways to borrow the existing audience from someone else.

    All the best,
    Thom

I would do what I have done, and would do again...

I would put up a five page website. Introducing My Services.

Get Out A Phone Book, and find someone who was interested in my service.

I would get a $6.00 per month homestead merchant account with an online credit card form, that I could type phone sales into.

And in agreeement with everyone above, you positively MUST create an irresistible offer!

I would do those things, but not necessarily in that order... I may just pick up the phone first, get a sale or two, and then build the 5 page website.

      Hi John,

Love your posts, by the way. They're great.

This isn't about me, or promoting my business. This is about promoting SOMEONE ELSE'S business. Lets assume they are a retail establishment, have a sub-par website, (like many), no lead capture (like many) no call to action, no localized search, etc, etc. and they need to generate sales in 30 days or less.

Just a little brain exercise on Monday Morning. Sound like fun yet? :+)

I've used Twitter to drive business for events and nightclubs. It can be very effective for that. And, I've seen it used very effectively by Starbucks and others to promote one-day coupons that people can either print and bring or just show their iPhone/Blackberry at the register. I've never actually used that approach myself.

I am kinda in the same boat - but, with a local home builder. I think #1 is out, #3 would have to be modified, and, "offers" would be interesting. You just don't call a homebuilder or a contractor on a whim, but, there are a lot of gems there.

    Any thoughts?

#1 one is an old David Preston idea. Actually, it works. People always look at their receipts. Just have them call the credit processing and make the change.

#3 I see people doing that one in my hometown all the time. As I understand it, it isn't spam if someone recently purchased something from you. That is the reason why many online merchants don't need you to go through a double-optin process.

      For a home builder...

      1.) free inspections,
2.) Righting a quick and easy "something" for free, especially with older neighbors, and use "law of Reciprocation" (sp?)
3.) build a list quickly (using techniques above) send offers based on season.

Off topic, but...I'd call a home builder on a whim, or make contact somehow if I honestly thought he was losing sales, or I could help.

I love the Law of Reciprocity. I have skimmed through the book called "Influence" by Cialdini - and he says that's one of the 6 reasons that people do stuff.

        Anyway - I like that.

This is particularly important to me - this home builder is going to build my house for me. I am really trying to get him set up with some good prospects now, because, it really benefits my price later.

You know a lot of seniors need work done, Especially older female seniors, but they've always done it themselves and now don't want to admit they either don't want/or can't, do it themselves anymore. So your guy is driving around and he sees something that could be done easily with the tools/material at hand. Walk up, knock on the door, and say "I was in the neighborhood and that was an easy fix. I'll do it for free." Leave a card. Who do you think they are going to call next? Or for that matter, I bet they come up with a list of things then and there. Then give them a good price and go to work.

    My two cents.

9.) Offer a "loss leader." (yes)
      10.) Upsells (yes)
11.) Cross sells(yes) but what do all of those 3 have to with your promotion unless your promoting those offers ?? to who and how ?
12.) what list do you have one yet ?
13.) JV with other local businesses (with list) to cross promote (yes).
      14) Article marketing ok but in under 30 days flocks in the door and sending the article to that non existant web site ?

14.) Co-Op Discount Card With Other Retailers/Service Providers ? what with no money ? do they add the business for free ?

Scroll up and read it. First post, first sentence.

"Let's pretend this is a brand new business and he needs to get business in the door in 30 days or less. And to make things interesting, use only non-paid methods. How would you do it?"

No one said anything about "no money." Using "non-paid methods" isn't the same as having no money. Which makes, almost all, of your assumptions, null and void. But like I said, this is a waste of time.

Most business owners are very nice people and want to help. If you can't find a local business of the same type call one in another area. Just tell the owner that you have just opened a business similar to theirs and ask nicely if they would give you some ideas of what they are doing. These owners will be able to give you the most relevant information based on your industry.

Get a mailing list of your local surrounding area and target your list based on the demographics of the type of clients your trying to attract and send them a mailer inviting them to your store and offer some type of incentive or loss leader product.

Have some post card size coupons made with great offers. Even if your offer has you lose a small amount of money on the front end you will most likely make up that money in long term clients. Give these out to local business around you. They were all new once too and like to help others.

Treat every customer as if they are your only customer. Try to engage them in small talk. Become their trusted friend.

Always tell customers you appreciate them and ask them to come back soon and bring a friend.

Tell your customers your new. Ask them to help you with referrals. If you ask someone for help and your specific about what you want you will be amazed how many people will go out of their way to help you.

Contact a local magazine and ask them to run an advertorial about your business. Do the same with your local newspaper.

Depending on the type of business you have you could contact other businesses and see if they need what your selling. You could even package some things at a discount that they could offer their employees .

Join a local networking group. Try to get in the largest one you can, that way you have more people out selling your business.

Always remember your clients are the most important thing to the survival of your business and act accordingly.

I have owned several offline business and I can tell you these things work.

Always be proactive. Don't get lazy. Your survival depends on it.

      Hope this helps

Engage with website visitors using a live support system, such as the 100% free LiveZilla software: LiveZilla - Freeware Live Help / Live Chat / Live Support - Official Website

I was on a competitor's website and a little box invited me to a live chat, and before I knew it, I was talking to the owner via instant message. I felt like it would likely be very powerful with actual potential customers.

This is of course only helpful to certain types of businesses. A restaurant or bar owner for example is not going to be sat online dealing with live support, but it'd work well for web designers, Internet marketers, etc.
