Leaving voicemails at offices

Has anyone had any success with calling local lawyers, doctors, etc, and leaving voicemails about your services and leave a contact number? I remember some people giving it a try, I wanted to know if any results came from it. I wasn't able to get my calls in today because I'm not feeling too well, and want to know if it is worth it to leave some voicemails. I know I can at least leave some voicemails tonight before I go to bed.

It can work, but your message has to be pretty compelling and arouse enough curiosity in the business owner's mind to call you back.

If it were me, I'd take the night off, do some reading, and get some extra calls in tomorrow.

I do this with lawyers after hours. Typically around 630ish.

I do it because they're definitely one niche that puts in tons of time, even after the secretary leaves. I often get the lawyer answering directly that late.

Keep in mind the average lawyer works around 60 hours per week, while the secretaries and associates work 40.

This is a good point... I HIGHLY encourage people to make calls when the gatekeeper is unlikely to be there, but the business owner is there. Later afternoons/evenings, early mornings, and even weekends can be good.

When I canvassed non-profit organizations across the country over the summer (I did full-time telemarketing), I noticed that voicemails were returned at a 0.5-1% rate. I didn't use any autodialers because the employer didn't have it, so I would have to leave messages manually. 20-30 seconds, times 200, for just 1 or 2 callbacks totally wasn't worth the effort, because a 'callback' isn't much more valuable than getting through a gatekeeper; it's by no means a guaranteed sale, just an interested prospect. I'd rather hang up and spend that hour-and-a-half trying to get through to other leads - more people pick up the phone, same result.

I can tell you what my experience has been. I have worked for advertising agencies, newspapers, radio stations and television stations and I am a consultant for creative financing for small business owners. In all the years I have cold called people, once the answering machine came on I hung up the phone. Do not waste your time. The only times you should ever leave a message is when you know the person or it is an emergency. The only thing an answering machine does is tell the person you are trying to call who to avoid - you.

If you insist on a leaving a message tell them you are offering something they want (keep it very simple and with very few details, enough to wet their appetite) and do so with a pre-written script to read from.

Right, and even at that, it only comes close to being cost-effective with an autodialer that leaves the message for you. Let the robot do the work while you go on calling the next number.

I tried making "personalized" voicemails, i.e., with a greeting by name and organization name that I'm trying to reach ... doesn't convert better at all.
