Google Your Phone Number - Embarrassing Story!

A potential client that I emailed sent me an email back today and this is what it read:

"Hi, sure give me a call at **********. By the way, have you ever Googled your phone number? It's associated with an escort service. Talk to you soon."

So I Googled my phone number and there was the escort service ad!

I got my business phone number through an online vendor and apparently, the person who had the number before me was an escort. She placed an ad on a website for her services, which comes up when you Google my phone number.

Her email address was on the ad, so I sent her an email asking her to remove the ad or change the phone number.

But I'm thinking it's probably best to just get a new phone number - and I JUST ordered new business cards with that number.

Anyway, if you use phone numbers from other services for your business, you might want to do a "background check" on them. LOL

Some business owners will try to find out as much info about you as they can before doing business with you.

I will be calling him tomorrow and I am so embarrassed!

      I know! LOL

Now that I think about it, I did get a strange call a couple of weeks ago.

This guy called and said "Hi, I'm calling about your services" and I started asking him questions about his business and he said "I think I have the wrong number."

I was confused... and thought "what did I say wrong"?

But now I think he was looking for HER services and not mine.

It all makes sense now... LOL

        Haha!! Wow!

Yeah, either getting a new phone number or doing an extensive reputation management campaign to bury any traces of the attachment of the number with the escort is ideal.

Probably easiest to get a new phone number unless there are a lot of clients/prospects with your current number.

I've had my cell phone number for 5+ years, and it's almost impossible for me to get rid of this number because so many friends and clients have it. Hopefully you're not in a similar situation here.

        Joshua

PS - Great tip by the way... heading over to Google my number now...

lol - that's a great story and a great lesson too.

Earlier this year I decided to try Vonage out for a second phone line and thought it odd that the day I ordered the account, about a week before I even got the equipment, I was having voicemails left for me.

Turned out to be from various collection co's looking for the previous owner of the phone number and it was so bad I had to ask them to change the number for me after about a month. The next number was better, but I still get calls and messages for the previous owner.

Apparently there's no waiting period with most VIOP phone numbers and someone can cancel one day and you could end up with their number (and headaches) the next.

I had a similar thing happen to me. I got a Google number and my TM was calling local Vegas numbers and she called me. I said, "hello" and she gave me the on my list it was a magnet company here in town.

    I thought the same thing...

Why was she calling a magnet company???

She no longer works for me

Dude, you're missing it. You got a lead-generating phone number for an escort service. Now get a quick website going, contact some escorts and tell 'em, you'll provide them with leads.

You'll take a cut -- and anything else they'll want to thank you with! I thought of a cool domain name...PimpinOnlineDotCom LOL

For your non-escort-oriented business, get a new number. But yes, if you're not adverse to it you could use the existing number for your benefit or even "sell it" to a working girl.

And, if you have any competition you want to get rid of, just post a few phony adds with their phone number - let them try to explain that :-)

Great story. I didn't know that getting a number from Vonage as one poster stated could result in the same scenario or at least close to it. Man oh man, you have to be exceptionally careful when dealing with ALL service providers it appears.

Hope your calls have been on the upside since.

      Wow, that's quite a story!

Just last night a man called our home phone because the number used to belong to his son. It was pretty sad on Christmas to have to tell him that the number no longer belongs to his son... apparently he's been trying to get in touch with his son for months now and has no idea how or where he is.

Not an embarrassing one for me, but I get some crazy calls!

I get calls on my number from 5-6 collection companies for the previous owner. After 4-5 months of regular harassment, my wife suggested I talk to one of her friends (attorney).

Long story short - we sued two of the collection companies and netted $3500 - after legal fees. We didn't even go to court - they knew they had screwed up and settled!
