301 redirects, multiple keyword rich domains for one client?

Here is a good starting point for discussion for two issues that I have been wrestling with.

Question 1.
In order to rank as easily as possible for a businesses desired keywords we all know one of the best things to do is get keyword.com, optimize the onpage seo, throw a few back-links at it and voila!

In hedging bets for a client that I am working with long term against potential competitors in the future inevitably working with an SEO. If I set up my client with mostsearchedkeyword.com but there are some close runner up keywords that are the type of traffic that we want but less traffic than the top trafficed keyword, I can attempt ranking this way: mostsearchedkeyword.com/2ndmostsearchedkeyword, mostsearchedkeyword.com/3rdmostsearchedkeyword, etc.

However, lets say 2 years down the road competitor A comes up and builds out 2ndmostsearchedkeyword.com, there is a good chance they are going to be able to surpass me for that keyword and I will lose traffic.

So options I am thinking through are the following.

1.Buy up all relevant keyword.com domains that are available that have any traffic that registers with google's keyword tool, and build out lead gen mini sites that are all forwarding to essentially primarykeyword.com where my clients primary site is built. Site will essentially be a generic branded squeeze page that won't immediately identify the primary company.

2.Same as option #1 except make mini-sites branded with company info.

3.I am being silly and the cost savings(in outsourcing link building) in ranking keyword.com domains as compared to otherkeyword.com/targetedkeyword and the future protection of competitors snatching up those domains is negligible and I should not have even brought up this discussion and should go focus on making some money.

Question 2.
Another client that has an existing site that he has had for a few years, some backlinks but not substantial, currently ranked first page but I am going to be getting him to top 3 for our target keywords.

I am building out a new website where it will be wordpress and seo friendly and am for the most part copying and pasting info from existing site but making everything a bit 'sexier' and update.

His current google places listing is showing up along side his natural rankings. Would you recommend new site, new google places listing (he is creating a new brand identity and company name for his service so we can do this) with a new address (he has another address we can use as he has 2 locations basically but only one of them was used online before), or build new site and 301 redirect old site to the new?

Potential duplicate content issues for the google places listing if olddomain.com 301'd to newdomain.com and both have a google places listing with different addresses, company names, and phone numbers?

Should I take current listing and just change name and 301 to new domain? If my research is correct changing the name on the google places listing is a good way to get knocked off the grid for a long time and it would just be easier to create a completely new one.

So what do you think about these two conundrums?
