Directories: How do you handle them?

Greetings,

One of the clients I am doing some SEO work for has multiple listings in the various online directories. Merchant Circle, Super Pages, etc. I mean, there are numerous multiple listings for his business in these various directories. For SEO purposes I am wanting to make sure there is just one listing and they all match up properly, etc. What's the best way to go about getting these old listings removed? Some have different addresses, phone numbers, and he even changed his name up so some have one name while other listings have the other. It's frustrating on the SEO side of it to have to fight with all of that to make sure everything has meshed up.

Have you tried contacting those sites directly? I think thats the best way to get the listings changed... I imagine this is a big problem for several other people as it is a lot to keep track of over the years... anyway a little searching from super pages yielded the following link

    xxx.supermedia.com/business-listings?tsrc=SP&campaignId=SP_FT_AddEditaBusiness

I believe you should be able to change the information from there... I'm sure the other sites have a similar interface... Also don't forget to put this client in Google Places... it can generate some good traffic and be slightly easier to optimize.

I am going to try and contact these directories and see what I can get changed. Though, I'm not the owner of these listings, they are my clients listings. There is just a ton of jumbled mis-information there and I'm sure that is probably hurting the Google Places ranking. Trying to figure out the best way to get these listings bumped.

While prospecting I have come across a lot of these directories too. Especially for lawyers and doctors.

There's kind of like a "Family Tree" where various directories start with root source listings
One is Localeeze and another is Info USA. If you correct these, the info will flow through eventually. There is a third main list, but the name escapes me now

It's a pain in the BUM going through one-by-one, but it was the only way I was successful in doing it.

UBL works, it just takes time...
