The Ethical Way of Getting Google Citations/Reviews?

Hey all, I am slowly but surely getting close to going for my first client in the offline "gig". Still being anal in making sure my website is good and finishing up on a few other elements before actually going out to get clients.

One of the questions I still have is in regards to getting reviews for my clients once I have them. Obviously that is an important factor in ranking their places page.

I'm not really comfortable on simply making reviews up, especially since I want to make sure I build a professional and credible business for myself. Going to a business owner and telling them one of the things I will be doing is making up reviews for your business so I can rank them better is not my idea of doing good business. What does it tell a business owner but that I'm not a totally honest guy and am I being honest with them in other areas?

My idea for adding reviews to a business who may not have a places page or other reviews anywhere else online already, is to enter honest reviews that they actually may have gotten within their establishment. Whether that be comment cards they have or some other in store system. I'm fine doing this as although I will be entering them myself, they are true reviews by customers. Obviously, I will incorporate a better system for them to begin using as well.

I'm wondering how those of you who are experienced with google places are handling your reviews? I understand the need for optimizing the reviews. In a few course and guides I've written, I have read suggestions straight up encouraging you to add fake reviews. In other instances from marketers who I respect and feel are upstanding, I feel I have interpreted "gray hat" methods to getting reviews which essentially are fake anyway.

Is there a general consensus as to approaching reviews? I don't mind walking a fine line, but as I said, I really want to establish a credible business while still being able to be competitive with those who may be doing it the dishonest way.

Rhab, what part of Maryland are you in?

I encourage my consultants to capture the review as soon as possible after the transaction has been completed. Also to spread the reviews evenly between sites.

    Example

Create short URL's for their major citations sources.

Each day direct their customers to one of the citations to leave a review. Inside of the review include the first name and last initial to verify and provide an "incentive" for completing the review.

Hey Solider, a fellow B'more Warrior =p I was born and raised in Baltimore and up to a few years ago was living there in the N.East District. I live in Harford County now. Thanks for the tip, I appreciate it. I checked out your site, very professional and impressive. I hope I can build my business up to that myself one day soon. Right now I'm focusing on only a couple areas, places I want to be my "flagship" service so to speak.

Have the business owners somehow incentivize reviews to their customers, good or bad.

Look into using custom QR codes at your clients to make it easy for their customers to leave reviews.

      First, don't fake reviews.

I also do not recommend that you enter the reviews yourself or that you have the clients customers enter reviews from a computer in the clients location.

Most sites like Yelp.com have an algorithm for reviews that takes into account the reviewers history, pattern and location.

The best way we've found to build reviews is to teach our clients to integrate asking for reviews into their customer service process.

Here are two methods that have worked for us:

      (1) Asking customers to leave their comments using their smart phone while still in the clients location; and

      (2) Following up with recent and previous clients with a series of email messages pointing to them to Hotpot, Yelp, etc.

We're getting good results having people enter reviews from their smart cell phones. We've created a post card size note that is handed out by our client. It asks their customers to visit a page on their website to leave their comments. It also has a QR Code (QR-Code Generator Tool - vCards, Websites, Messages, Emails & More) that is linked to whatever review site is best for our clients specific industry. We actually vary the sites we send people to versus having all the reviews posted to one. The important thing is to make it easy for them.

You mentioned citations. You probably know that citations are any mention of the company online, including mentions without a link back to their website. One of the first things we do for citations is to make sure their data is correct with the data providers that feed their various directories.

The BIG issue here is trust: Google's trust of the data, and a prospective customers trust of what they find about the company online.

      Hope this helps.
