A great guideline when you're starting out is to offer the services you know you can provide or outsource easily.

Most internet marketing strategies can be used to help a business make real sales and profits so it doesn't matter so much what service you provide.

What does matter is your committment to actually making your paying clients some real profits.

Typically what we do is offer ONE service that solves a problem for the business owner (and they have to call us to ask for it)... from there, once they're a customer for one service, we'll do a "needs analysis" (on request) and show them where they're lacking and the benefits of taking action on any recommendations we make.

Our services include anything and everything but I've learned over time that if you sit in front a customer and try to explain all your services in the same manner you and I might talk about them, the Business Owner's eyes will soon glaze over with indifference and boredom.

They might understand the "benefits" if explained correctly but most won't have a clue when you tell them what services you offer. I realize I kind of drifted off in another direction there but I hope it helps anyway!

I have basically learned how to build mobile friendly sites and will be offering that as a new service. Here in South Africa 90% of all surfing is done on cellphones.... so may be a good market.

That's the truth. I'm in the eastern cape and I promise you, walk into my village center here and there is bound to be someone on a cell phone. I have even visited family and friends where I then have to take part in a one and a half sided conversation because they are either on facebook or mixit....

I am a full time business consultant who has now focused all my time into providing totally free ($0 out of pocket) audits/reviews of 4 areas of business expense that are commonly over-billed (US businesses only). Yes, I am selling a free service and when a refund check is received (or proof of hard $ savings going forward) we share the profits. I also have an affiliate program where I will share 20% of my profits with anyone referring new business -- which is a great way to get new business. THEN, once I get in the door and they see we are only there to help, I get a better understanding of their other needs/wants and can offer them help in those areas (be it marketing, grants, hr, whatever). I found that in this economy being able to provide businesses a service that does not require them to put money up front was the way to go. The only down side is that you don't see your payment until they actually receive their check/savings (so it can be anywhere between 1 and 3 months later). I also use Manta's free online business search site because you can easily narrow the search by # of staff, annual sales, contact info, etc.). Later, Richard

  I think a good approach is to focus on one or two services first until you build a good client base and then you can go back and offer them more services once they are your customer. This approach will allow you to build a more sustainable income without overwhelming your customer.

I offer Leads for businesses. These are real, live qualified leads who put in their information to be contacted.

A lot of companies are paying Yellowbook, and PPC management companies to get customers. They are paying a monthly fee, or paying per click, and this is in the hopes that some of that cost will become customers.

I offer a real Lead for a fee. This is very enticing to most business owners who are paying too much for advertising.

  Yahoo local is a directory organized by category and geographic location. You can get a basic listing in yahoo local for free. People searching for your business or industry can find your listing. It works well
