Can we rank on Google Places for many many keywords?

Hi there,

My client wants to rank on page 1 of Google Places for 20 keywords.
I have no idea how to do it since we cannot stuff keywords in the description, right?

Can we charge per keyword ?

Need an advice from Google Places expert out there

Thank you so much.

I do know that when you do 3-5 they will usually rank for some other related keywords naturally, but to my knowlede I don't think you can control the amount of extra rankings or the related words beyond the description.

    Joe,

Yes, you can rank for well over the 5 categories. This is usually done with longer tail phrases and by using additional keyword rich phrases in the Description and More Info sections. Additionally, data from your citations will play a role here.

Well keywords in the description don't usually rank well anyway. I never put KW there, but use that section more for boosting conversions & clickthrough rates.

I used to be able to get clients ranked for 20 -25 keywords the 1st day I touched their Place page.

But those days are largely over. Partly due to the new algo (and the need for SEO) but also due to the latest revision of the guidelines. The new 'is' vs 'does' rule is pretty limiting.

No chance if you are complying with Googles T&C. You can rank for 5 but it depends if you consider geo modifiers as different keywords. Reviews and citations are playing a big role as is the quality of the linking website address. You could of course make several listings but they must have different details or they will be merged ! not nice

Wow, that goes against 99% of the common SEO tip of including a few important words in the “keyword” META tag.

Personally, I think it’s wise for Google to disregard the keywords tag. As noted in the article, many people try to stuff the meta tag with dozens of keywords, including those of their competitors. How does this help provide relevant search results? It doesn’t.

As for me, I try to limit my keyword tags to five words or less, but it’s good to know Google doesn’t care anyway. I wonder who still does?

The keywords you want to rank for need to be in the business title and categories. Other than that, the keywords being in the Google reviews works very well. This works well for auto repair shops where a happy client reports that "they did a great job on my BMW..." Now the shop will show for BMW repair in addition to auto repair.

Google Places can certainly rank for a limitless amount of keywords, but it depends on the competition for the keywords as well as your ability to find the right mix of Business TItle, categories and reviews that puts it on top. I am not suggesting fake reviews either, just ethically coaxing them out of customers for maximum benefit.

You can rank a company for 20 keywords like you want by focusing on ranking them for their industry. Sure their listing has only 5 categories and you can put a few more in the rest of the listing but it really boils down to what you do everywhere else that is the key. If you do your citation work and use other keywords that are associated with the main categories that you are targeting you can achieve this. I have seen and done this personally, so yes it can be done.

I would not suggest that you charge per keyword. That is great for organic but very difficult to track for local. impo

You can rank for 20 keywords....but it will take time and a bit of effort.

In a video by the Google team they said they rank place pages by:
      • Relevance
      • Prominence
      • Distance

You just gotta make sure the business is hitting those 3 areas for each keyword.

I think the big one is prominence. The business needs to be seen as the prominent source for each keyword.

I would first work on getting the actual web page ranked on page 1 for each keyword.

Then get reviews with each keyword in the review. And as many citations as possible for the business.

      That's just my 2 cents.

I ran into one of my competitors ranking for quite a few at least 8 keywords that I know of in the top 5 results for places. How did he do it and better yet, how can I beat him? Help!
