What is it that you do ?

Does this band already have a web site ? Do they take full use of social media marketing ?

      Hi.

I think before you can offer services you need to know what kind of problems they are having with their current situation.

      Questions To The Band:

      1) What do you feel are the problems with your current website / online presence?

      2) What would you like to accomplish, specifically? Sell $5000 more product each month, build a mailing list of 1000 subscribers in 3 months, get 500 more friends/followers/visitors in the next 60 days, etc.

      3) How many customers do you currently have?

      4) How much does a customer spend per transaction? i.e. What is a typical sale amount?

      5) What can you resell to an existing customer?

      6) What is the lifetime value of a customer?

      7) Do you have any kind of tracking system to tell you how many visitors you get per month?

      8) Do you currently have a customer database?

      9) Besides the website, what kind of advertising is being done?

      10) How much do you spend on these other forms of advertising?

      11) Do you feel these other forms of advertising are successful? Why? What is their ROI?

      12) How much do you spend on promoting your current website?

      13) How often do you contact your current customers?

      14) How many new customers / sales have you had in the last month? The last 3 months? The last 6 months?

      15) What makes your product / service / band unique?

      16) Who is the target audience?

      17) What does the target audience want? Music samples, discounts, newsletter, forum, ability to talk with the band members, advance notice of concerts, etc.

      18) How do you currently reach your target audience?

      19) What is your advertising budget?

      20) How many more sales / customers would you expect to get for your given budget?

This is just some sample questions. I would try to gather as much intelligence as possible about their current situation, what they want to improve, and how much they are willing to spend to improve it.

Once you get that information you can formulate a strategy to meet their needs.

Just my 2 cents. Hope this helps.

Do they have any money? Unless they're signed artists, musicians are usually pretty broke.

What is it they want the site to do?

    Inform
Get sign ups (for email marketing)
    Showcase work
    Call them
    Book tickets
    Etc

Knowing the answer there will help get ideas going for restructuring it and how you drive traffic to it.

Do they have a Places listing and is it properly optimised?

Mike - they have a cd out but that does not mean much, but i will find out how much of a budget they have today at the meeting.

Jacquic-I think they want to build publicity because they will be going on a west coast tour soon and they want to sell their music, book shows and sell tickets.

thank you and keep it coming.

I will find out more of the nuts and bolts of there current strategy when we meet

Well having product is an excellent first step. That means someone has put some time and money into creating it and wants to recoup the investment!

Don't really have a lot of advice for you other than ask questions and listen for the real decisionmaker. Most bands are a core and then the added guys/gals (John & Paul vs. Pete Best).

I'm with MichaelHiles on this one - most of the time, they don't have any money. If you want to work with them to sharpen there skills, here's what I would do:

    - Myspace: Still a great place for bands to promote. Get friends. Update. Explore.
    - Facebook: Same as above.
    - Twitter: Same as above.
    - Youtube: Build awareness through Youtube. You can do Youtube PPC and target bands that they are similar to, letting the audiences know that "If you like so-and-so, you'll love MY BAND"
    - Google TV Ads - Did you know you can create a video commercial on SpotRunner.com and then put it on TV as a commercial through Google like Adwords? ...you can

    my 2 cents...

Good points here, something like a band is really dependent on buzz and (hopefully getting viral through) social media. Nevertheless they should have a central homepage, even if it just features the most basic things, like album, song samples, tour galery, portrays of the bands members etc. That's just the basis and all the social sites should have a link to that and it should rank at the top spot if you google for the bands name.

If you want to create some professional and slick looking videos, check out animoto.com and then use these videos on all the social sites and youtube.

They need to use the site to build a list (so they can update and remind people, make special offers, etc). They'll benefit from a mix of:

    An autoresponder
Something to download to incentivise them to sign up
    RSS feed or similar
    A good twitter following
    A FaceBook Page
You Tube (and similar) videos with keywords

    There's loads more, but that's a start.

Find regional music blogs and contact the blog owner and have them cover the ban.
    Press releases.
Community announcements in the papers for the areas they will be playing in.
Contact local radio stations to try and get them on the air for an interview.

Just a quick thought from a mobile marketing/social media standpoint. You could get them a qr code that they could put that on all their posters. The qr code could link to their facebook page or a web page of the venue where they will be playing. Qr code generators are free too. If they have any money, you could set them up with SMS marketing. They could notify their fans where they will be playing. You could build the SMS list with a text to win promotion where they give away free CD's, etc...

@johnmeyermlps: Definitely the QR code; they can have it everywhere. On their MySpace, Facebook page, or poster; even on their T-Shirts. People tap the QR and can see video, hear music samples, see events calendar, possibly win something?

To get it all sewn up add a Wordpress blog with plugins that automatically post to Twitter and Facebook. Videos on YouTube and post video replies to other videos...

They can submit songs to online places like Animoto and One True Media - their music is used free but they can make sales too.

hey guys I wanted to update you all as to what happened with my appointment.

Lets see 3 of the 5 members of the band showed up,and they had no money for marketing to speak of and one of members thought he knew everything about internet marketing, but was actually clueless.

I think next time i will qualify better in regards to the budget,as i should known better being in sales for many years.

I appreciate all the help and advice I got I do think it helped me even though it was no deal.

You'll have better luck with a biz owner... Its not you, its just that you can only talk business to a business minded person.

    Thanks for updating.

Sorry it worked out like that, but now you will have a much better idea of what pre-qualifying questions to ask.

Hopefully this doesn't come off the wrong way, because my only intent is to help. But...

This is more proof that you need to pre-qualify prospects. You need to ask them a bunch of questions before you spend any significant time meeting them in person and/or spending more time with them.

You could have found out they had no money before you spent the time to go meet them.

Not trying to bash you. You did a great job on taking action and getting out there and making things happen. Just keep in mind next time that you want to pre-qualify prospects a little more. It will save you lots of headaches.

Again, good job! I'm sure you learned a lot from the experience and we now have this thread full of ideas that people can revert back to when needed.
