Question about domain names for small towns

I am building a website for my auto mechanic here on the Oregon coast. The town has a population of about 8000. The exact match keyword domain name is available, and his business domain name is available, too! I think it would be easy to rank for either domain name because of the research I did. Do you think I should get the keyword domain name or the business domain name? Thanks for your opinions! I'm also making him a Facebook Fan Page!

    Kathy,

I would grab BOTH. Right now while available.

      Hi Hugh,
Thanks for your advice. That's what I was thinking. Then I could forward the business domain name to the keyword domain site!
I just saw a post about getting $1.49 domains at GoDaddy right now, too!
The code is either WINTER149 or 149WINTER....I'll go check.

        Absolutely get both.

You don't have to put both sites right away but at least create a one-page shell with some minor content on it before it auto redirects in say 30 seconds.

Grab the .net and .org versions as well and just make them immediate redirects using the Go Daddy forwarding option.

Doing it this way, you will have domains that are aging and you also protect the domain names from being snapped up by someone else. Especially, competitors.

        Regards,

        John

ps - Say hello to my cousin Jim who lives in Eugene for me.

OK, I grabbed them both and will probably get the .net and .org, too!
Thanks for the comments and advice everyone.

John, I'll definitely say hello to your cousin Jim who lives in Eugene!
He's a really nice guy! LOL Too bad The Oregon Duck's lost the college football championship, though!

I would suggest getting the business domain name. Much easier to post on business cards and much more appealing.

Make sure you create a Google Places profile for the shop.... That is EXTREMELY important. You said you've already done your keyword research, so it shouldn't be a problem knocking out the On-Site SEO. Then turn your attention to the Off-Site SEO (backlinking). And the SERP positioning/ranking will follow... And should follow relatively very easy!

            CHEERS!

Please don't throw up some sort of shell and redirect after xx seconds. That is just so unnecessary and annoying.

You mentioned GoDaddy, just do the permanent forward and be done with it.

Did you get them for $1.49?
I saw a post after reading this with the coupon code NewYear11

Darn, I just saw a guy selling 50 some domains with RoofingContractorState last night for $20. Not all had search volume but a handful most definitely did.

Smart to pick up the local and business name if he has any recognition and to protect his identity, less someone else come along and take it.

Definitely get them both, and as was also pointed out it's very cheap to get the .net and .org domains too, especially go for the geo-specific names.
