    You're forgetting a few "heavies".

    1. Kudzu
    2. Judy's Book
    3. BBB
    4. Their Chamber Of Commerce
    5. Shop City
    6. AVVO, Lawyers.com for lawyers obviously.

I'm on the road today so I don't have my list in front of me.

Of course I usually create my own citations as well in cities I have a presence. For instance if I were in San Diego like your esteemed self. I'd build 10-20 different directories so I could build my own citations.

    - I removed Yext, it's very easy to completely screw up your entire listing by them implementing their tracking numbers.

I have to give some credit to where I outsource this. WLmarketing.com will submit your site to 35 directory/citation sources for $15, 100 directory/citation sources for $40 and then they have 200 and 300 directory/citation lists too, but I think they are a bit expensive for the benefit. They will email you their list if you ask them. Then you can pick which 35 or 100 your want them to submit to.

I have no affiliation with that WSO, and don't own a copy either, but what I do know is that not all citations are created equal so a generic citation list is only going to get you so far - the real meat comes when you start looking at sources for specific niches and locations (for example - did you know that the citation source used by most top ranking businesses in the "beauty" niche come from facebook?).

Drop me a pm and I'll see what I can do to help (although it may not be immediate, I'm going on vacation shortly)

Absolutely true. However, under equal conditions a place page that has bigger number of citations in generic directories would still beat a place page that has lesser number of citations in generic directories, right? Therefore, submission to any single directory could eventually affect your ranking in a positive way. Definitely citations in local directories and especially in niche-oriented directories weigh much more (generally), but do not underestimate the generic directories. I would suggest everyone tries a couple of tools, which I personally find extremely useful - White Spark's Local Citation Finder, and the Local Search Toolkit (unfortunately I cannot post them as links). They are going to give you some insight on where your competitors got their citations from. If you see a directory where you have no listing, but some of your competitors have - claim your business there. I think this is the best and fastest tactic for finding local and niche directories.

No argument on that from me - my point was that there are many generic directories that are missing on the lists posted here.

I've done a quick comparison of the ones posted here to the top 30 citation sources I've identified (after examining almost 2.4 million of them), and there are some gaping holes missing there - no less than 12 missing (out of 30) which is pretty substantial IMO.

I also couldn't agree more with the "do your own research" that you're suggesting - that's what's enabled me to see where high ranking sites are really getting their "juice" from rather than just guess.

            Martin

P.S. As an example of one of the "glaringly obvious" omissions from the list is....

            city-data.com

(the 19th most popular US citation source for top ranking local sites from my research)

I am pretty sure this would be against Google Guidelines, so I would not suggest anyone to do it, although it sure is tempting. Stick to the Google Places position, organic position and the AdWords (if you have set up one) position and you will be perfectly fine and on the good side of the line.

I wouldn't suggest it either... I actually said it in jest... Hard to display emotion when typing. Or if you don't know me... I have a twisted sense of humor like that...

If you submit to only directory then submit to the Open Directory Project (DMOZ). The SEO and traffic rewards are incredible. There are thousands of sites that use ODP data in their sites. Google may or may not provide extra weight having the DMOZ listing.
You receive a free listing with great PR. You can submit to a second regional link if your site applies (brick and mortar businesses would have the best chance).
DMOZ.org has a PageRank of 8. Your links are often displayed on PageRanks ranging from 4 to 6.

It's not a bad list, but there's lots missing even from a general citation point of view - there's clearly lots missing when you look at niche specific citations of course

For example - no mention of:
theUSAexplorer.com (a MASSIVE citation source for a lot of high ranking sites)

Issuu.com (again, a MASSIVE source for high-ranking sites)

And that's just the obvious omissions from the top 20's list I've put together from the 1.7+ million citations I've looked at (yup - you read that right!)

Perhaps I should release a proper list of citation sources :p!

All those citations are a pain to ad manually. Any automated software?.

I was to do 25 citations for a client but gave up at 5. I couldn't take it anymore so I went outside to clear my head. lol It's crazy but someone has to do it. So I need automation. anyone?.

Bear in mind that Google not only uses citation sites from the local country but also varies its authoritative citation sites based on the industry that the business operates in. The above lists are great mainly for the US and would work for a few other countries where these sites operate, however I find that the best way to pick citation sites is from within the currently highly ranked place pages. For example, the currently attached citation sites for restaurants in Sydney are completely different to the ones for lawyers in Sydney. I have seen these variances throughout, so it will be rather hard to have a list that will cater for all countries and business categories.

okay so I've been hearing people say something about MAKING directories for their local niche and geo location...

Does this mean you have some directory software and you actually make a directory on a domina that you buy specifically for your niche and area? Or what?

Hi bigalan6622, you dont need to have a directory of your own which you buy etc, if thats what you meant. What is important is to use the existing directories, but what is even more important is to know which directories to use for the type of business in the local country / city. This is exactly why I created the google local citation finder software for myself and then decided to make it available for others for a small price - finding the right citation cites was a nightmare. Now I simply assess my competition for the keywords I am targeting and simply beat them using their own citations (obviously there is a lot more that goes into ranking on google places, however citations is by far the most important if you have done the other little bits correctly).

      Hope this helps.

Thanks for sharing the updated lists!

Do any of you find any special value to adding a citation whenever uploading a YouTube video? I am referring to the area in the video options when you can select the date of the upload and geographically mark the video based on Google Maps.

Again, thank you to those who were kind enough to share the list.

There is a BUNCH of value there... If you optimize the videos that are attached it creates a full circle... Really... Your question is more toward video optimization than it is Google Places... But they do affect each other...

    Here is what I mean....

The better your On Page Optimization is on your website... the better chance you have of ranking on Google Places...

The better your Off Page Optimization is on your website... the better chance you have of ranking on Google Places.

The better your Video is Optimized... Using the Domain in beginning of the description, with a 3-500 word keyword oriented article that has your business contact information in the sig (including address), Geo Identifier by registering the address on the right side where is says to do so.... Also Title the video a Keyword with your phone number... Then throw some social book marks at the video.... and use pixel pipe to upload it to 30 other video sites....

    You can't lose....

Doing that and then throwing a few hundred article links at the video will get you a Trifecta. Assuming you already have done your work on your website to get it page one...

So.... You will have a Google Places Listing... A Video on Page One... and an Organic Listing...

This should effectively lower your CPC on adwords so that you can go ahead and set a low budget on adwords and have 4 postitions on google for your keyword...

Who do you think is going to get the most traffic? You or your competition?

I've never looked it like that. That's a great idea. You could also go for the other organic spots on the page and dominate every spot except for the other places listings.

        Exactly...

Even then.. one could register several business names with phone numbers that go to the same place and dominate those too...

        Really...

I believe in getting clients results.

With a Trifecta, or Fourfecta... whatever you may want to call it. You can increase your contact conversions. Then it is up to the direct response marketing principles and copy of the website you build for them that will really make or bread a campaign.

That is why... If they won't pay me to do a re-design. I will do it for free.

        I am about results.

The happier your client is. The happier you are going to be when you have new clients calling you because their friend told them about you, your service, and what a big difference you made to their bottom line.

If you guys want a solid foundation for local citations, go to Local Lasso and click on our spreadsheet-looking image on the top-right. This will download the citation spreadsheet right to your computer in xls format.

Most of you should be able to get at least 120+ citations done off that list. The list is comprised of "general" directories and has been tested for U.S.-based businesses only, but many should work for just about any country. We'll have country-specific directory lists up shortly, but that "general" list should give everyone a good "head-start" on any local competition out there.

After filling out the general directories, go for the hyperlocal/hyperniche directories accordingly. For quick hyperlocal mentions, check out your local tv media station websites, local newspaper websites, local radio websites, etc as they tend to offer a ton of local "community portals".

To help you find hyperniche/hyperlocal citation resources, I'd recommend using the following desktop software by fellow Warrior stryker, we are currently using it for our citation submission service and it is working FLAWLESSLY:

    http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...-software.html

There are free resources out there too, like Whitespark's citation finder tool as well. I just like having an organized desktop app that I can use on the fly. Plus he uses it consistently himself, so I'm sure he'll update it regularly.

    Hope that helps!

    WORD TO THE WISE:

Service Magic may be a good citation but do NOT let your clients participate in the Exact Match program.

With the EM program Service Magic goes out and creates citations on many of the great sites mentioned in this list, HOWEVER.. they use a call tracking number that is readable in the HTML code which screws up your NAP consistency across the web for your clients.

How do I know this you might ask? I'm a retired contractor who used Service Magic. = )

So.. If you are hired by a contractor make sure to ask if they've ever used Service Magic and if so did they participate in the Exact Match program. If they did you'll have some extra citation work ahead of you.
