Why are people saying Google places is 'not safe' ?

Hi,

I see that people are at times pointing out that Google places is not something you can control. And essentially, nothing really related to Google or SEO is fully controlled, but what do these people mean?

If I build citations, get legitimate reviews, link a website with the local Places listing, optimise the listing and SEO the website - this will always work, will it not?

So where would the risk be in providing this as a service?

No body is saying it is not safe however in the last few months they have started to change the rules a lot so basing all your business on this one model could be dangerous.

A number of years ago people had built great businesses based on googles adsense only to find their complete business fail because of this change.

In recent posts it seems as if Google will be checking where citations were coming from and IP's so unless these are all individual it could be that the listing will never get any ranking.

Of course if you follow the rules and do it right I don't see any problems.

    Quentin,

Thanks for coming in. I actually saw your original thread and posted this as more of a response to clear it up for myself.

In terms of reviews, I would be getting them legitimately posted by real clients. Citations.. well, not sure how to build that up naturally ? Can google even check the IP source of all citations?
