Have Any Of You Tried Becoming An "Expert" In Your Area Through Local Media

What I am talking about are things like a local real estate agent writing a weekly newspaper article on something related to real esate and indirectly gaining free exposure. Or a financial consultant giving free daily tax tips on the radio. Or today I heard a local car dealer giving auto advice on a local radio station, then at the end the dj thanked him and mentioned the name of his dealership.

I think you get the idea. This is not new I know.

But I'm wondering as offline consultants, specifically in the area of some form of IM consulting if this method has been used in our field? I'm not sure how it could work but just wondering if any of you have considered or practiced this?

    Absolutely.

    It's one of the easiest ways to position yourself to new clients/prospects.

    Leverage local "celebrities", they'll do the major lifting for you.

    The best marketing is word-of-mouth marketing.

      My question i guess then is what information "angle", could a person take to the local media to provide something of value to masses with regards to IM or offline marketing?

      For example;
      If your a "SEO GUY" what could you provide?

        Help the local experts/celebs for free.

        If you deliver on what was promised, they'll be singing praise.

        Even something as simple as a free report, or simple explanation of how to get listed in G places (don't reveal anything about citations, just submission). ANYTHING that provides value can be your hook.

        You're going to have to get them to understand the power of the Internet, SEO, etc. for their business. Most service businesses close at 6pm or earlier. What if someone wants information at 630? They cant call the business because they're closed.

          Just wondering...From your experience, what % of businesses these days really need to be convinced of that though? SEO has been around forever and it seems just about half the internet posts on boards like this already that it's hard to believe that many businesses are oblivious to this. Also, how do you think the landscape on this changes from a Big City environment (say, NYC) to a small municipality with a population of around 150,000?

            Most brick and mortar owners have no idea about how to do SEO, or even know about forums like this.


            There are TONS of business owners, no matter the geo, that still believe they dont need websites. Then there are the owners that know they DO need a website, but have no idea how to get one and make it come to fruition, let alone appearing in Google.

        My angle is my disability. I suffer from Aspergers and have achieved what people consider to exceptional considering my disorder... Gets me into the paper, onto the TV and on talk shows LOTS.

    I would not go off as an SEO guy but more as a marketing guy. Talk about different types of marketing and what is beneficial for small business owners

    I've considered this, as I have ties in local media, but at this point in time I'd rather focus on marketing my own products/services.

    I do think that targeting local communities is a great idea, though.

    I think in some of those cases they are paid advertising. Others, it's a matter of knowing someone and getting in. Honestly, there isn't much exposure in that arena that is truly free, aside from press releases if they get picked up.

    I'm the editor of a small business publication promoting economic development in my city. Through it and some other opportunities I've developed a local public profile for myself and my business. I promote home-based businesses, small business and primary employers but do not accept copy from outside sources except regional partners to the city. Instead, I'll do a profile on a business, or promote them through a quote. For example, writing about accounting or taxes, I may quote what I've heard one of the local cpa's say in a meeting or discussion or call them for a quote and list their business.
