Local Search Ranking Factors: What The Experts Say...

There have been allot of threads lately on the topic of local search ranking factors and because of that, there is a allot of correct and incorrect information being posted.

I have been reading David Mihm since 2009 and thought it was time for me to share a great resource with you. Each year, he produces a report called "Local Search Ranking Factors". So without further adieu, here's the link:

Local Search Ranking Factors | Local SEO Best Practices for Google, Bing, Yahoo

A few words before you click the link:
  1. There's a lot of material to digest (read it, don't just skim it)
  2. Read the comments of those who contributed to the report (there's gold there)
  3. You will note that even those experts have mixed opinions about what matters and what doesn't
  4. For most of your customers, you'll only need to focus on the top 20% to get results
  5. Not only are there things that help, there things that will hurt a listing
  6. If you find the resource valuable, come back to this thread and hit the "Thank You" button.
Okay, so now that we have an understanding, click the link and read the report (I suggest 2-3 times).

Thanks for the link John, there is a lot of valuable information on that page. I know things change a lot and there are a lot of good WSO's and other products out there, but there is also a lot of very good content to be found for free if you just look.

Yup - plenty of solid, fact based information available. And given sources like David Mihm's site, much more reliable than many WSO's. I'm not diss'n WSO's, I'm just say'n.

I also follow David Mihm, Mike Blumenthals, etc. We have been successful with these concepts and I really wish there was a sort of industry standard with local search. That's what we are trying to establish...I would love some help!

There are quite a few critical factors missed off there - and a few that seem a bit random - it's a good starter though - but a bit long in the tooth now.
