Google Places Listing Sitations, your opinion ?

It's been 4 month since google organic indexed all the citations I have built for the google places listing yet none are appearing on the places page. Anyone has had the same experience ? All the data in citations matches the Google Places data to the dot. I am baffled by this ?
Any advice ?

It doesn't matter if Google is displaying your citations or not. The important thing is that they are indexed.

Also, add some backlinks to your citations. I'm not saying this will make them display in your Google Places listing, but it will help your rankings.

@jzmoore, ping what ? the citations ? I dont see the point since google already indexed them, and I have pinged them when I first created them to speed up the indexing. Do you think pinging them again will help with the places ?

I used to generally have the same problem with the places listings, however what really worked very well is to make the citations first, wait for a few days even after they are indexed. Then create a few backlinks to your citations and wait 2 days or so again. Only then, claim the place page. It does seem that at the time of claiming / activating your place page, google does its thing to scour the internet and adds all citations in there - there is therefore, apparently, no better time to create citations than before claiming the page. At least this is what my experience has been.

What is absolutely important is to know which citations actually work, and for that you need to research which citation sites are having the biggest effect for your group of keywords or niche. I am creating a tool for my campaigns to research groups of keywords and pull out the popular citation sites for given sets of keywords. No need to keep digging and I become a an expert in any niche pretty quickly as a result ...

A point to bear in mind that you do not really need a website ranking local listings - and some industry observers seem to think that a site based on the changes to only a minor impact on local listings. Even if you make changes to your site to increase its relevance to their area of operation is positive, regardless of its possible impact on local listings.

My experience is that this used to be true but it's not anymore. Google Places has changed a lot lately.

I'm 100% in agreement with you KristofferIM. Especially since the latest update by google.

Also, from a pure common sense standpoint, having a website gives a business more credibility from a customer's viewpoint.

Everyone, think about that. If you put yourself in a prospective customer's shoes and search for a business. Which one are you going to be likely to visit - Business A with only a place page with virtually no information or Business B that has a blended listing and complete information?

        I'm leaning heavily toward B...

Hey I have noticed you mention that a few times. In return are the citations showing up in the Places listing under web references section? If not I would not tip my hand to competitors by displaying citation listings on my listing profile, but that's just me.

Could someone either give me some quick steps to ping a citation or a link on how to do it?
    Thanks!

A citation is simply a mention of the business online. There is no specific format unless you are creating an hCard microformat. You just need to mention the business name, address, and phone number just the way it is listed on your Place page. Ping it? You may want to create it on a blog post, then bookmark the blog post with Digg. Or ping the rss feed with the blog post on it.

      • I hand submitted a ton of authority citations back in May and none of them have shown up. Note of my clients have gotten new citations even though I used to submit to LocalEze or UBL and in some cases both.

In talking to top pros I brainstorm with, including Mike Blumenthal, the assumption is Google is still COUNTING these as a ranking factor, they just aren't showing all the citations on the Place page.

Not sure why, except to mess with people like us and make it harder to figure out the algo.

My first impression and gut feeling is that Google isn't showing these citations so as not to disclose important factors for ranking that competitors can see and then mimic. = )

          Just my 2 cents.
