PPC / Adwords for Clients - Any Courses?

6 replies
Lately, I have met a lot of business owners who want me to manage their Adwords/PPC campaign and I always turn them down because I don't quite know how to do it (I've never run a PPC/Adwords campaign before).

I tell them that it's better to go the SEO route (because this is what I've been taught by other marketers pretty much).

However, I've seen a lot of Warriors actually recommend PPC/Adwords so the client can start seeing some early results... so there must be a positive side to it.

So now I'm wondering if I should actually start taking on this business.

It can't be THAT difficult to learn, right?

Does anyone know of a good course or WSO that teaches how to do PPC/Adwords specifically for local businesses?

Thanks!

    Google Adwords offers a great certification program with some really good tutorials.. You can do a Google for "Google Certification Program" as I can't post links yet..

    Keep in mind that a PPC campaign is an important part of optimizing a site organically.. It is always a good idea to start off with a PPC campaign when starting to optimize a site.. This is because SEO is more of a public relations strategy than anything else.. The more other people know about your site, the more likely that they'll link to your content if they like what they see.. And one of the fastest ways to have people get to know your site is through the use of PPC campaigns... It can also be a cheap alternative if you know what you're doing..

      The Google AdWords Certification program and Perry Marshall's 'Definitive Guide to Google Adwords' are a good start to learning about doing PPC.

      Both are general AdWords education but contain information on how to do local PPC.

        Depends on the market, in a really competitive market in the US/UK you will get eaten alive as a newbie.

        I would suggest starting out with very small campaigns to learn and not client accounts.

        At least do it to your own site first, Perry's book is good, most of that information still applies, but that is mostly for account set up, NOT management.

        Management comes from understanding client goals and how Adwords works in regards to bidding, quality score and lots of other factors.

        You will only piss people off if you don't know what you are doing, small account should be ok.

    My advice as a full time PPC account manager, would be as mentioned above check out there own tutorials AdWords Help

    A lot to get you started here.

    My next sugestion would be to download Adwords Editor and watch some tutorials on how to use it. (will save you huge time)

    and finally when setting up a local account I would split it in to 3 separate campaigns

    * Brand
    * related terms
    * and location (this would be generic terms but Geo targeted to say a 25 mile radius of the business)

    Next I would build everything in Adwords Editor and use there grouping tool to form all your ad groups.

    My sugestion would be set up a dummy account just to learn the processes.

    In regards to Perry Marshals Adwords Guide I would buy the latest edition, I like the stuff to do with writing and testing creatives some nice little nuggets in there.

    Just test with small budgets and track everything
